Paper 1
1. (a) Let $x be the marked price of the computer.
x(1  20%) = 4 800 1M
0.8x = 4 800
x = 4 800  0.8
= 6 000
∴ The marked price of the computer is $6 000. 1A
(b) Let $y be the cost of the computer.
y(1 + 20%) = 4 800 1M
1.2y = 4 800
y = 4 800  1.2
= 4 000
∴ The cost of the computer is $4 000. 1A

2. (a) Let $x be the marked price of the bag.

x(1  15%) = 1 020 1M
0.85x = 1 020
x = 1 020  0.85
= 1 200
∴ The marked price of the bag is $1 200. 1A
(b) Let $y be the cost of the bag.
y(1 + 70%) = 1 020 1M
1.7y = 1 020
y = 1 020  1.7
= 600
∴ The cost of the bag is $600. 1A

3. (a) Let $x be the marked price of the jacket.

x(1  40%) = 180 1M
0.6x = 180
x = 180  0.6
= 300
∴ The marked price of the jacket is $300. 1A

(b) Let $y be the cost of the jacket.
y(1  20%) = 180 1M
0.8y = 180
y = 180  0.8
= 225
∴ The cost of the jacket is $225. 1A

4. Let $x be the cost of the watch.

Marked price = $x(1 + 20%) 1M
= $1.2x
Selling price = $1.2x(1  30%) 1M
= $1.2x(0.7)
= $0.84x
x  0.84x = 80 1M+1A
0.16x = 80
x = 80  0.16
= 500
∴ Marked price = $1.2(500)
= $600 1A

5. Let $x be the cost of the television.

Marked price = $x(1 + 40%) 1M
= $1.4x
Selling price = $1.4x(1  10%) 1M
= $1.4x(0.9)
= $1.26x
1.26x  x = 1 300 1M+1A
0.26x = 1 300
x = 1 300  0.26
= 5 000
∴ Marked price = $1.4(5 000)
= $7 000 1A

6. Let $x be the cost of the bed.
Marked price = $x(1 + 25%) 1M
= $1.25x
Selling price = $1.25x(1  40%) 1M
= $1.25x(0.6)
= $0.75x
x  0.75x = 500 1M+1A
0.25x = 500
x = 500  0.25
= 2 000
∴ Selling price = $0.75(2 000)
= $1 500 1A

7. Let x be the number of children.

Then, the number of adults is x(1 + 50%) = 1.5x. 1A
x + 1.5x = 40 1M+1A
2.5x = 40
x = 40  2.5
= 16
∴ Number of adults = 1.5(16)
= 24 1A

8. Let x be the number of junior form students.

Then, the number of senior form students is x(1 + 30%) = 1.3x. 1A
x + 1.3x = 966 1M+1A
2.3x = 966
x = 966  2.3
= 420
∴ The required difference
= 1.3x  x
= 1.3(420)  420
= 126 1A

x + 0.8x = 135 1M+1A
1.8x = 135
x = 135  1.8
= 75
∴ The required difference
= x  0.8x
= 75  0.8(75)
= 15 1A
