Plunger valves

Plunger valves operate on a spring-loaded plunger that allows flow around the
,plunger. The valve is typically cemented or threaded in the collar
Single- and double-valve configurations are typically available in both
float shoes and float collars. It is important to consider that double valves
do not increase valve rating. Instead, a second valve is added for contingency
purposes only. Plunger valves tend to be more stable (less vibration) than
flapper valves, particularly at higher float rates when the plunger is fully seated. Most plunger
.valves used in float equipment are PDC drillable
Plunger valves offer a more restricted flow-by area inside the valve when
compared to flapper valves, making them more susceptible to LCM or solid
material bridging the seal. They are commonly manufactured from plastic
materials, but are also available in aluminum construction, depending on
.the application
Plunger valves can be set in autofill mode by running the plunger partially open. The valves
are then converted by circulating above the conversion flow rate or circulating during a
.certain amount of time
When evaluating autofill float equipment, ECD and required circulating
times should be considered to ensure the equipment conversion rates or time
.can be met
When using flow rate converted autofill float equipment, field personnel must try to avoid
sudden movements of the casing that could create

excessive surge and inadvertently convert the valve. This includes stopping
.the casing too fast or picking the casing up from the slips too fast
If the valve is accidentally converted prior to being run in the well, it is
recommended to check with the manufacturer if and how the valve can be
,reset to autofill mode. In some cases, such as double-valve float equipment
.this may not be possible in the field
When planning to drill out the float equipment, it is important to understand the materials that
will be drilled out and to follow the manufacturer’s
drillout procedure when available. Keep in mind however that drillout efficiency will depend
on specific well and drillbit conditions and operating
.practices
Conventional float collars or shoes are also available in single or double
valve configuration. A summary of potential advantages and limitations, and
.common designs, options and specifications is presented in
