NALCO® 72310
Feedwater pH Adjustment
Condensate Corrosion Inhibitor
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION AND APPLICATION: (Public Viewing)

NALCO 72310 is a corrosion inhibitor designed for use in steam and condensate systems. It may be used
at steam pressures up to 170 barg and temperatures up to 593ºC. NALCO 72310 provides effective
neutralization of acidic gases such as CO2 in the condensate system. NALCO 72310 is the recommended
product for the Electric Power Generating Industry that has stringent specifications on the steam for
cation conductivity.

Stainless Steel Brass
Fluoropolymer Nickel
PVC Copper
PVC
Fibreglass
Polyurethane

All chemically wetted components of NALCO 72310 feed systems such as feedlines, valves or pump
heads must be of stainless-steel construction. The use of non-ferrous metals such as copper, aluminum
or zinc must be avoided.

DOSAGE AND FEEDING: (Public Viewing)

Refer to the applicable industry standard and/or the boiler or steam turbine manufacturers'
specification for control guidelines.

As boiler feedwater alkalinity adjustment

NALCO 72310 dosage will vary depending on the existing boiler feedwater pre-treatment systems,
operating conditions, and on the desired pH level in the boiler feedwater.

As a condensate corrosion inhibitor

NALCO 72310 dosage varies according to the CO2 content of the steam, the amount of system venting,
the percent condensate return, the condensate system configuration, equipment, and the desired
condensate pH. The carbon dioxide content is different in every system but can be either measured
directly or calculated. Dosages in systems with demineralized water or high condensate returns, for
example, will be lower.

NALCO 72310 must be fed neat (undiluted). The best feed point is to the steam header through a
stainless-steel retractable injector (231-P4634.88 and 231-P4694.88 are recommended and available
through Nalco Equipment Solutions). Feeding ahead of the deaerator, to the boiler feedwater or to the
boiler steam drum will result in product loss through the deaerator vent and/or through the boiler
blowdown. The amine lost through the blowdown will reduce corrosion protection in the initial
condensation areas. When used as a steam condensate corrosion inhibitor, NALCO 72310 must be fed
on a continuous basis.

DOSAGE AND FEEDING: (Private Viewing)

The following graph gives the correlation between dosage and pH of the boiler feedwater in the absence
of contaminants. Theoretically, 1.5 ppm of NALCO 72310 is needed for a pH of 9.0 based on the basicity
and concentration of the amines. Depending on the nature and concentration of contaminants, the
value can be lower (unpolished return condensate) or higher (acidic species). Please note that the
resulting pH of the steam has to be determined in the field, as organic matter can decompose in the
boiler and intrusion of CO2 could happen.

NALCO 72310 should not be mixed with any other chemicals including amines, either neat or in solution.
However, it can be fed through a common stainless steel retractable injector (231-P4634.88 and 231-
P4694.88 are recommended and available through Nalco Equipment Solutions) by manifolding neat
chemical feedlines at the injector.

ROI CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR: (Private Viewing)

The value for the customer in NALCO 72310 depends on its primary use function: feedwater alkalinity
adjustment or condensate corrosion protection. When used for feedwater alkalinity adjustment, NALCO
72310 is more economical than most of the classic Nalco neutralizing amines combinations, because of
its higher concentration of less costly amines. When used for steam condensate treatment, NALCO
72310 effectively reduces condensate system maintenance costs. It minimizes the potential for
deposition of metallic corrosion products returned through the condensate system, causing overheating
and boiler tube failures.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND TOXICITY DATA: (Public Viewing)

toxicity) and Section 12 for environmental information.

SAFETY AND HANDLING: (Public Viewing)

Read carefully the label and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for complete handling information before using this
product.

STORAGE: (Public Viewing)

NALCO 72310 has a suggested in-plant storage limit of one year.
