General Instruction: Show your solutions and alterations/erasures is not allowed. Box
your final answers.
1. Specifications require the oil filter for your car to be tightened with a torque of 30
N.m. You are using a 15-cm long oil filter wrench, and you apply a force at the very
end of the wrench in the direction that produces maximum torque. How much force
should you apply?
A. 2000 N B. 400 N C. 200 N D. 30N
2. A typical compact disk has a mass of 15 g and a diameter of 120 mm. What is its
moment of inertia about an axis through its center, perpendicular to the disk?
A. 2.7 X 10 – 5 kg.m2 B. 1.1 X 10 – 4 kg.m2
C. 5.4 X 10 – 5 kg.m2 D. 2.2 X 10 – 4 kg.m2
A classic figure-skating jump moving forward, leaps into the air, and turns one-and-a-
half revolutions before landing. The typical skater is in the air for about 0.5 s, and the
skater’s hands are located about 0.8 m from the rotation axis.
3. What is the approximate angular speed of the skater during the leap?
A. 2 rad/s B. 6 rad/s C. 9 rad/s D. 20 rad/s
4. The skater’s arms are fully extended during the jump. What is the approximate
centripetal acceleration of the skater’s hand?
A. 10 m/s2 B. 30 m/s C. 300 m/s2 D. 450 m/s2
6. An 8.00-m ladder of weight WL = 454 N leans against a smooth vertical wall. The
term “smooth” means that the wall can exert only a normal force directed perpendicular
to the wall and cannot exert a frictional force parallel to it. A firefighter, whose weight
is WF = 862 N, stands 6.30 m up from the bottom of the ladder. Assume that the
ladder’s weight acts at the ladder’s center and neglect the hose’s weight.
Find the forces that the wall and the ground exert on the ladder.
7. A student sits on a pivoted stool while holding a pair of weighs. The stool is free to
rotate about a vertical axis with negligible friction. The moment of inertia of student,
weights, and stool is 2.25 kg.m2. The student is set in rotation with arms outstretched,
making one complete turn every 1.26 s, arms outstretched.
8. When the electricity goes out in the campus, a backup source powers the servers
that handle communications and the Internet. Rather than use batteries, many
installations use a flywheel, a heavy rotating disk that spins, very rapidly, with nearly
zero friction. An electric motor spins up the flywheel, which continues to spin with very
little energy input. When the system needs to provide power, the flywheel’s motion is
used to turn an electric generator. A typical system has a 535-kg cylinder with a radius
of 0.40 m. A small electric motor provides a constant 3.5 N.m torque to spin up the
cylinder. If the cylinder starts at rest, how long does it take to reach its final spin rate
of 13,000 rpm?
9. Three forces (magnitude either F or 2F) act on each of the thin, square sheets shown
in the drawing. In parts A and B of the drawing, the force labeled 2𝐅⃗ acts at the center
of the sheet. When considering angular acceleration, use an axis of rotation that is
perpendicular to the plane of a sheet at its center.
10. A 20-m long slab of concrete is supported by roller, as shown. If the slab is pushed
to the right, it will move off the supporting rollers, one by one, on the left side. How far
can the slab be moved before its center of gravity is to the right of the contact point
with the rightmost roller – at which point the slab begins to tip?
