CHAP 10-ASTRANGE TRANSFORMATION

1. One morning, as Gregor Samsa was waking up from his

anxious dreams, he noticed that he had been changed into a
monstrous verminous bug. After his transformation he
discovered that he had developed an armour-hard back and a
brown arched abdomen which had been divided up into rigid
bow-like sections. Instead of two legs, he had numerous legs
which were pitifully thin in comparison to the rest of his
monstrous body.

2. Gregor Samsa worked as a travelling salesman. A travelling

salesman is a person who visits shops, houses and other
businesses to sell items or show samples issued by the company
the salesperson works at.
According to Gregor Samsa, the job of beingga
travelling salesman was 'demanding. He complained about
having to travel for his job which was troublesome for him.
Apart from this, Gregor had to worry about train connections,
irregular bad food, and temporary and constantly changing
human relationships which, according to Gregor, never came
from the hearts of the people.

3. Gregor Samsa did not like his job as it was demanding and
troublesome for him, but he had to continue doing his job for
his parents' sake. Gregor had to pay off his parents' debt to his
boss and therefore, he could not quit his job. He made an
estimation that he will have to work for another five or six years
to clear the debt of his parents.
In the story, Gregor talks about having a difficult boss
at his office who was hard of hearing, which made it difficult to
communicate with his boss properly. This and the challenges of
his job made Gregor's life miserable. Therefore, he quickly
wanted to pay off his parent's debt, then quit his job and focus
on the things he wanted to do in life. He wanted to make a big
break and was quite hopeful about it.

4. Before Gregor's mother called out his name, Gregor was

wondering that how he had failed to hear the alarm clock. He
was supposed to catch the five o'clock train but as he could not
hear the alarm, he was late for his office. Therefore, he was
thinking of catching the train which left at seven o'clock. He was
also anticipating a blow up from his manager after reaching the
office late.

5. As Gregor could not hear the alarm clock, he was late for
his office. Therefore, his mother came to remind him that he
was getting late. He responded by saying, yes, yes, thank you,
mother. I'm getting up right away'. Gregor was startled when he
heard his own voice responding because it was his human voice.
However, his voice was intermingled with a painful squeaking.
