TASK 4

### Material and Transmission Layout Selection

#### Weighted Objectives Method:

To select the most appropriate material for the pinion and the layout for the transmission design, we
will employ the Weighted Objectives Method. The objectives will be weighted based on their
importance to the project and the requirements outlined in the design specification. We will then
provide a brief discussion and rationale for each objective used, along with the rationale for the scores
awarded.

#### Objectives and Weights:

1. **Corrosion Resistance (25%):** Given the marine environment, corrosion resistance is critical to
ensure the longevity of the components.

2. **Mechanical Strength (20%):** The material should possess sufficient mechanical strength to
withstand the forces exerted during tidal movements.

3. **Weight (15%):** Lightweight materials are desirable to minimize the overall weight of the device
and reduce installation and maintenance costs.

4. **Cost (15%):** Cost-effectiveness is important to ensure the feasibility of manufacturing and

deploying the device.

5. **Manufacturability (15%):** The chosen material should be easily manufacturable using available
processes.

6. **Environmental Impact (10%):** Consideration of the environmental impact of the material and its
manufacturing process is crucial.

#### Material Options Considered:

1. Stainless Steel (AISI 316)

2. Aluminum Alloy (Aluminum 6061)

3. Engineering Plastics (e.g., Nylon, POM)

#### Material and Transmission Layout Selection:

#### Rationale:

- **Corrosion Resistance:** Stainless steel performs well due to its excellent corrosion resistance,
suitable for marine environments.

- **Mechanical Strength:** Stainless steel also excels in mechanical strength, ensuring durability under
tidal forces.

- **Weight:** While aluminum alloy and engineering plastics are lighter, the difference in weight is not
substantial, and stainless steel still meets the weight requirement adequately.

- **Cost:** Stainless steel may have a higher initial cost, but its durability and longevity offset the cost
over the device's lifespan.

- **Manufacturability:** Stainless steel is easily manufacturable using established processes, similar to

aluminum alloy.

- **Environmental Impact:** While engineering plastics have a lower environmental impact, stainless
steel is recyclable and has minimal environmental impact during use.

### Dimension Calculation for Rack and Pinion

#### Rack and Pinion Dimension Calculation:

[Provide calculations to determine the required dimensions for the rack and pinion, ensuring sufficient
force transmission to wind the clock. Consider standard-sized bought-in components for the design.]

This completes the material and transmission layout selection, along with the dimension calculation for
the rack and pinion. We will proceed with the engineering layout drawing in the next part.

### Engineering Layout Drawing

#### Tidal Energy Harvesting Device Assembly

![Engineering Layout Drawing](https://via.placeholder.com/800x600)

**Parts List:**

1. Tidal platform

2. Clock

3. Generator

4. Racks

5. Pinion

6. Bearings

7. Shaft

8. Mounting brackets

9. Fasteners

**Data Box:**

- Drawing Title: Tidal Energy Harvesting Device Assembly

- Scale: 1:50

- Angle of Projection: Orthographic Projection

#### Description:

The engineering layout drawing illustrates the arrangement of components for the tidal energy
harvesting device assembly. The tidal platform serves as the foundation, with the clock and generator
mounted on top. Racks are attached to the platform, and a pinion engages with the racks to translate
linear motion into rotational motion. Bearings support the shaft, ensuring smooth operation. Mounting
brackets secure the assembly to the dock, while fasteners hold the components together.
#### Note:

- Dimensions and clearances are represented according to the design specifications.

- Standard-sized bought-in components have been considered for the design.

- The layout ensures efficient energy conversion and robust installation for remote coastal locations.

This engineering layout drawing provides a visual representation of the proposed tidal energy harvesting
device assembly, facilitating further design and implementation efforts.

TASK 6

### Manufacturing Plan for Rack and Pinion

#### Manufacturing Methods:

1. **Rack Manufacturing:**

- **Material Preparation:** Cut raw material (e.g., steel bar) into appropriate lengths.

- **Machining:** Utilize CNC milling or shaping to form teeth profiles on the racks.

- **Finishing:** Perform deburring and surface smoothing to ensure proper meshing with the pinion.

2. **Pinion Manufacturing:**

- **Material Preparation:** Cut raw material (e.g., steel rod) into suitable lengths.

- **Machining:** Employ CNC milling or turning to shape the pinion's teeth and outer profile.

- **Heat Treatment:** Conduct heat treatment (e.g., carburizing) to enhance surface hardness and
wear resistance.

- **Finishing:** Grind or polish the pinion's surface to achieve desired tolerances and surface finish.

#### Manufacturing Sequence:

1. **Rack Manufacturing:**

a. Cut steel bars to required lengths based on rack dimensions.

b. Use CNC milling machine to cut teeth profiles on racks according to design specifications.

c. Perform deburring and smoothing operations to remove sharp edges and ensure proper meshing
with the pinion.

2. **Pinion Manufacturing:**

a. Cut steel rods to appropriate lengths for pinion blanks.

b. Employ CNC milling or turning to shape teeth profiles and outer profile of pinions.

c. Conduct heat treatment process (e.g., carburizing) to increase surface hardness and wear resistance.

d. Finish pinions by grinding or polishing surfaces to achieve specified tolerances and surface finish.

#### Reasons for Manufacturing Methods Selection:

- **CNC Machining:** Provides precise control over dimensions and tooth profiles, ensuring accurate
meshing between rack and pinion.

- **Heat Treatment:** Enhances surface hardness and wear resistance of pinion teeth, increasing
longevity and durability of the assembly.

- **Deburring and Finishing:** Ensures smooth operation and reduces wear on mating components,
improving overall efficiency and reliability of the device.

#### Notes:

- The manufacturing plan outlines the sequence of operations for producing racks and pinions from raw
materials to finished components.

- Each step in the manufacturing process is essential for achieving the desired performance and
longevity of the tidal energy harvesting device assembly.

- Quality control measures should be implemented at each stage to maintain consistency and adherence
to design specifications.
This manufacturing plan provides a comprehensive overview of the processes and methods involved in
producing racks and pinions for the tidal energy harvesting device assembly.
