ABSTRACT

There are several examples of projectile motion in nature. The

interrelationship between various parameters associated in this
motion, interprets the specific geometric pattern for two
dimensional motions. In present work, horizontal range of jet
of water has been estimated by taking certain specific angle of
projection, and then presented them in graphical form. This
work would be valuable to study other parameters like
maximum height attained and the variation of resultant velocity
for any instant of projectile motion.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I am indebted to all past and present physicists of Nepal; without
whose extensive work and literature this study would have never
been possible.

I wish to express my deepest sense of gratitude and profoundly

regards to my supervisor, Mohan Bhandari, Physics teacher,
Janak Model secondary school for learned guidance, abiding
interest and for all the pain he took to get my study work
completed and document prepared in time..

Thank you everyone.

INTRODUCTION

Water jet motion is an example of projectile motion. In

projectile motion, a body (usually called projectile) only under
the effect of gravity. A cricket ball returned from the bat after
striking by a batsman is a projectile and the motion of the ball
before reaching the ground is a projectile motion. A parachute
cannot be a projectile. Since its motion is not only influenced
by gravity, it is greatly perturbed by the air resistance.

In projectile motion, the time of flight, horizontal distance travel

and the greatest height achieved by the projectile depends on the
angle of projection. For a projection angle θ, the range (R) of
projectile can be determined as;
R=(u^2sin2θ)/g
Where, u is the initial velocity of projectile and g be
the acceleration due to gravity.
For constant initial velocity, R𝖺sin2θ
In this project work, we determine the quantitative
relationship between the horizontal range(R)travelled by
the jet of water at different angles of projection. Then,
the result has been interpreting graphical form.

1
AIM OF THE PROJECT:

 To measure the initial velocity of a ball that is fired from

a projectile launcher (spring gun) by measuring its
horizontal and vertical displacement.
 To collect data regarding the use of primary energy source.

CHAPTER-3: MATERIALS AND METHODS

To perform the experiment, we have chosen a wide field and

marked in every meter distance separation on the ground. A disc
was set on the ground and marked different angles like, 0°,
5°,10°, 15°, 20°, ……, 90° as shown in figure below. A jet was
filled with water. The water was pressed out at a minimum angle
(say 0°). Then, the water was allowed to eject out from the free
end.
The horizontal distance of water strikes on ground from the free
end of jet was measured. The jet has been oriented for other
angles, and corresponding distances that the water striking on
the ground were measured using the marking on the ground and
a meter scale. The observations of angle of projection and
horizontal distance have been listed in a tabular form. Finally,
the graph has been plotted to analyze the relationship between
these parameters.

CHAPTER-4: OBSERVATIONS AND RESULTS
We have measured the horizontal distance travelled by the water
at different angles of projection. The range of water was found
increasing in the beginning during the increment of projection
angle and then observed decreasing as in above figure, although
the projection angle is increased. The observation of angle of
projection and corresponding values of horizontal ranges are
presented in below table. The initial velocity for each projection
was set 10m/s.

The graph has been plotted taking angle of projection along x-axis and the horizontal range along
y-axis. From the graph, it has been observed that the maximum horizontal range is achieved at
projection angle 45°. The range is zero at the projection angle 0° and 90°. Also, the horizontal
range was found equal in pair of projection angle, for instance, 40° and 50°, 30°and60°,
20°and70°and soon. The nature of graph is shown in below figure.

DISCUSSIONS AND CONCLUSIONS

We have performed an experiment to study the relationship
between angle of projection and corresponding horizontal range
by using a jet of water. From the experiment, we have obtained
the graphical interpretation of motion of water jet under the
effect of gravity. Also, we have observed the horizontal distance
travelled by the water jet is maximum at the projection of
45°and the vertical height attained is regularly increases upto
90°.
