Padang Linjong Residence

The residence was built in 3 years, located in Bali Indonesia. The main materials
chosen were concrete and wood. These two materials were selected to maintain
peacefulness and simplicity throughout the space to allow the lush greenery to stand
out. Staying to a minimum choice to complement the natural landscape and
environment. The house has a split leveling, so as you enter you can see into different
spaces on different levels.
The entrance way of the house makes you feel like you’re about to enter an exclusive
concrete jungle with the raw floor extending from the doorway to the interior of the
house. Along with the plant box and bamboo accents right at the ingress of the path
this adds that authentic tropical Balinese feel.
An overhanging concrete slab hangs on the side of the house, not only for a tropical
brutalist aesthetic but functional to keep the direct sun from penetrating the double-
height windows. The Balinese sun is strong, so an overhanging concrete slab shelters
the Residence from too much direct heat penetrating through the double height
windows. The architects designed the functional slab to add an intentional Brutalist
touch to the home. This creates a real grandeur to the overall home particularly
throughout the entrance and main living space. The main living feature is a double-
height void and upper-level music space for audiophile listening and Vinyl's record
archive. Studio space compromises of a box structure and an outdoor bathroom are
situated on the ground floor which gives tropical living vibes.
The kitchen and dining area is full with no walls and entirely open plan, with sliding
doors to encourage a cool breeze throughout the space and perpetuate an indoor-
outdoor atmosphere.
All open to maintain the outdoor-indoor living and letting the cool breeze throughout
the day. A bridge over the living room connects the upper floor bedrooms. The
overgrown landscape softens the hard concrete structure and will continue to grow.
The outdoor landscape is overgrown on purpose to soften the solid concrete exterior.
The plan is to allow it to grow over time into an unruly, organic aesthetic. These lush
surroundings are brought inside as much as possible as well. The glass panels
scattered around the house provides a bright but indirect light which is best for
indoor plants.
