Project Title: DryPort Operations and Performance Analysis in Myanmar

1.0 Introduction
1.1 Industrial Background of the Study

The logistics and supply chain landscape is undergoing significant transformations

worldwide, with a growing emphasis on efficiency, sustainability, and connectivity. Within
this context, the concept of DryPorts has gained prominence as a pivotal link in the
global trade network. DryPorts, often referred to as inland ports or intermodal terminals,
play a crucial role in facilitating the seamless movement of goods between seaports and
inland destinations, offering a range of services such as container handling, customs
clearance, and value-added logistics activities.

This research embarks on a comprehensive investigation into the operations and

performance of DryPorts in Myanmar, a country strategically positioned at the
crossroads of Southeast Asia. With a rich history in the garment manufacturing industry
and a burgeoning retail sector, Myanmar's economic landscape is intricately linked to
international trade. The transition towards a more open and market-oriented economy
has prompted a need for efficient logistics infrastructure, making DryPorts a key
component of the nation's trade facilitation strategy.

The study stems from a deep-rooted understanding of both the apparel and fashion
industry and the logistics and supply chain domain. Drawing from this interdisciplinary
background, the research endeavors to shed light on the challenges, opportunities, and
best practices associated with DryPort operations in Myanmar. By conducting a
comprehensive analysis, the study aims to contribute valuable insights that can inform
policy decisions, improve operational efficiency, and foster the growth of a resilient and
competitive logistics network in the country.

3|Page
In the subsequent sections, the study delves into the key components of DryPort
operations, examines the performance metrics that drive their effectiveness, and
analyzes the broader economic and trade implications of their functionality.
Furthermore, the research aims to identify potential areas for enhancement and
propose strategies for optimizing DryPort operations to align with the evolving demands
of global trade and regional economic integration.

Through this exploration, the study aspires to not only deepen our understanding of the
complex dynamics surrounding DryPort operations but also to offer pragmatic solutions
that contribute to the sustainable development of Myanmar's logistics infrastructure,
bolstering its position as a vital player in the regional and global supply chain network.

1.2 Company Background of the Study

Resources Group Logistics - DryPort (RGL-DP) is a prominent third-party
logistics (3PL) service provider specializing in dryport operations within Myanmar. With
a strategic focus on facilitating seamless trade and optimizing supply chain connectivity,
RGL-DP plays a pivotal role in the country's logistics landscape.
RGL-DP brings a wealth of experience in logistics and supply chain
management, drawing from its core competencies in various areas including container
handling, warehousing, customs clearance, and transportation. This expertise positions
RGL-DP as a key enabler for businesses engaged in various industries, facilitating
efficient and timely movement of goods between seaports and inland destinations.
Strategically located at key transportation hubs within Myanmar, RGL-DP
operates at the crossroads of regional and international trade routes. This
advantageous geographical positioning positions the company as a central player in
connecting landlocked regions to global markets through efficient dryport operations.
The proximity to major economic centers and industrial clusters enables RGL-DP to

4|Page
serve as a critical link in the supply chain of both domestic and international businesses.
RGL-DP's commitment to excellence is reflected in its industry recognition and
accolades. The company has been acknowledged for its contributions to advancing
logistics capabilities in Myanmar, as well as for its efforts in promoting sustainable and
responsible logistics practices.

With a foundation built on a deep understanding of logistics and supply chain

management, Resources Group Logistics - DryPort stands as a driving force in
optimizing dryport operations within Myanmar. By bridging the gap between trade,
transportation, and technology, RGL-DP plays a vital role in shaping the country's trade
landscape and contributing to its economic prosperity.

2.0 Problem Statement

In the context of Myanmar's evolving trade landscape and the pivotal role played
by Resources Group Logistics - DryPort (RGL-DP) in facilitating efficient dryport
operations, a critical challenge emerges in optimizing the performance of dryports to
meet the demands of an increasingly interconnected global supply chain. Despite RGL-
DP's expertise in logistics and supply chain management, there exists a pressing need
to address key operational inefficiencies and bottlenecks that may hinder the seamless
movement of goods between seaports and inland destinations.

As the strategic importance of dryports within Myanmar's logistics network

continues to grow, it becomes imperative to identify and analyze the specific challenges
faced by RGL-DP in achieving its vision of enhancing trade efficiency and contributing to
the country's sustainable development goals. This research aims to delve into the
underlying factors that influence dryport operations, including container handling,
warehousing, customs clearance, and transportation, with a focus on identifying areas
for improvement and proposing actionable strategies that align with global best
practices.
Through a comprehensive analysis of RGL-DP's operations, this study seeks to
shed light on the barriers hindering optimal performance and propose solutions that can

5|Page
drive operational efficiency, reduce bottlenecks, and enhance the overall effectiveness
of dryport operations. The ultimate goal is to contribute to RGL-DP's mission of creating
a logistics ecosystem that not only meets international standards but also fosters
collaboration among stakeholders, thereby positioning Myanmar as a key player in the
regional and global supply chain network.
By addressing the challenges and opportunities within RGL-DP's dryport
operations, this research endeavors to provide valuable insights that can inform
decision-making processes, drive policy improvements, and further the growth of a
resilient and competitive logistics infrastructure within Myanmar.

4.0. Literature Review of the Study

4.1 Literature Matrix of the Study

The Literature Matrix of the Study can be seen in Appendix A

4.2 Literature Study

In this research, the fundamental objective is to comprehensively investigate

"Dryport Operations and Performance Analysis in Myanmar." To achieve this goal, a
mixed-methods approach is deemed most appropriate due to the complexity of the
research topic and the need to gain a comprehensive understanding through various
perspectives. This approach integrates both qualitative and quantitative research
methods to offer a well-rounded analysis.

(1) Qualitative Analysis: In-Depth Interviews

Qualitative analysis through in-depth interviews will be employed to capture the

intricate perspectives of stakeholders involved in dryport operations. This method allows
for a deep exploration of their experiences, challenges, and strategies. By conducting
interviews with key individuals from Resources Group Logistics - DryPort (RGL-DP),
insights into operational intricacies and potential areas of improvement can be gathered.

(2) Quantitative Analysis: Performance Metrics Measurement

Quantitative analysis will involve the collection and analysis of performance metrics
related to dryport operations. This approach aims to quantify key aspects such as
container turnaround time, transit times, and cost-effectiveness. By employing
quantitative data collection methods, an empirical understanding of the efficiency and
effectiveness of dryport operations can be attained.

The mixed-methods approach combines the strengths of both qualitative and

quantitative methods. Qualitative in-depth interviews provide a rich understanding of the
human element involved in dryport operations, allowing for the exploration of challenges
and potential strategies. On the other hand, quantitative analysis offers measurable
insights into performance metrics, providing an objective perspective on operational
efficiency.

By incorporating both approaches, this research method maximizes the depth and
breadth of insights. Triangulating qualitative insights with quantitative data enhances the
validity of findings and strengthens the research outcomes. This comprehensive
approach ensures that the study not only identifies challenges but also provides
substantiated recommendations for optimizing dryport operations in Myanmar.
