Problem 1 (9 points)
Consider a rock thrown off a bridge of height 75 m at an angle of = 250 with respect to the horizontal as
shown in below figure. The initial speed of the rock is 15 m/s. Answer question a) to e) using the provided
coordinate system Oxy (positive Ox pointing to the right and positive Oy pointing upward):
Question 2 (8 points)
The 1.0 kg block is tied to the wall with a rope. It sits on top of the 2.0 kg block. The lower block is pulled to
the right with a tension force of 20 N. The coefficient of kinetic friction at both the lower and upper surfaces
of the 2.0 kg block is K = 0.4 .

a. What is the tension in the rope holding the 1.0 kg block to the wall?
Question 3 (8 points)
A car that is initially at rest moves along a circular path with a constant tangential acceleration component of
2.00 m/s2. The circular path has a radius of 50.0 m. The initial position of the car is at the far west location on
the circle and the initial velocity is to the north.
a) After the car has travelled 1/4 of the circumference (1/4 of the circle), find the linear velocity (with respect
to the circle) and the rotational velocity of the car (with respect to the centre of the circular path)?
A 2.0-kg block is released from rest and allowed to slide down a frictionless surface and into a spring. The far
end of the spring is attached to a wall as shown. The initial height of the block is 0.50 m above the lowest part
of the slide and the spring constant is 450 N/m.
a) What is the block’s speed when it is at a height of 0.25 m above the base of the slide?
b) How far is the spring compressed?
c) The spring sends the block back to the left. How high does the block rise?
d) If the surface is not frictionless, provide the approach, including explanations and involved equations being
used (not detailed calculation with numerical values), to calculate the distance that the spring compressed
as in question b.
