COMP 121- COMPUTER AIDED DRAFTING

ENGR. MARK ANTHONY SINAMPAGA- INSTRUCTOR

What Is Computer Aided Drafting?

Computer-aided drafting (CAD) utilizes computer systems and software for designing anything
from small appliances to buildings.

AutoCAD Software
AutoCAD is a commercial computer-aided design (CAD) and drafting software application. Developed and
marketed by Autodesk, AutoCAD was first released in December 1982 as a desktop app running
on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers.
AutoCAD is used in industry, by architects, project managers, engineers, graphic designers, city planners and
other professionals. It was supported by 750 training centers worldwide in 1994.

Top Uses of AutoCAD

Programs based on computer-aided design have revolutionized the world of engineering and architecture.
It’s simply much easier, faster and better to design things using a computer instead of using sheets of paper.

Here’s how AutoCAD is frequently used.

1. Engineering Drafting Tool

AutoCAD has the possibility to produce very accurate designs. Engineers frequently used this program to
analyze and solve design issues when creating plans for buildings or mechanical components.

For example, AutoCAD can be used to find out how large an engine component should be to fit into a new
car model. Adjustments can be made with just a few clicks and the engineer saves a great deal of time in
comparison with using designs on paper.

2. Architectural Planning Tool

Architects can also use AutoCAD when designing new buildings and floor plans.

This program features a multifaceted layout which lets architects create designs for small or large buildings.
You can draw entry points, leave space for plumbing systems, design electrical circuits, basement plans,
etc.

One of the best things about AutoCAD and similar computer programs is that key elements can be color-
coded, so you instantly know the names and functions of components. Although it might take a while until
you familiarize yourself with this program, you’ll be fascinated by its potential and the enormous benefits
it provides.

3. 3D Printing
3D printing is becoming more and more popular these days.

It basically gives you the opportunity to create a three-dimensional model of an object you design in a
computer program. For example, you use AutoCAD to design a rubber duck and the printer takes data from

this program to print it as a three-dimensional object. This is the basics of 3D printing and it’s the future
when it comes to manufacturing processes.

On top of that, AutoCAD is optimized to communicate with other computer programs, so you can export
designs and edit or print them.

4. Fashion Industry
AutoCAD is one of the most versatile programs out there. It has the possibility to design a multitude of
objects, large and small.

For example, AutoCAD is extensively used in the jewelry industry. Professionals use it to design new
diamond rings and calculate where and how the precious stone attaches to the metal.

AutoCAD can also be used to design toys, including LEGO bricks. Toy manufacturers can use this program
to create the shape of the toy as well as its decorative elements and components. When the design is finished,
it’s supplied to the manufacturing company to start mass production.
5. Mechanical Industry
Since AutoCAD gives you the possibility to design almost anything in virtual reality, it's frequently used
in various mechanical industries, particularly the aviation one.

For example, engineers can design the shape of an aircraft wing and determine scenarios on how much lift
this type of wing can generate. Making such calculations and projections in computer programs saves a
great deal of time and money, not to mention that it optimizes the designing process.

Engineers also use this program to design new types of screws, bolts, bathroom accessories, furniture items,
power tools, you name it. This computer-aided design software also lets teams of multiple collaborate and
work on a single project simultaneously and in real time.

Top Benefits of Autocad

Now that you know how this software program is used, it would be a good idea to have a broader
understanding of its benefits:

1. Increase Productivity
AutoCAD helps you put together the components of a building or a mechanical part in a very short amount
of time. There is also an animation feature which helps you understand how these components work
together. You can make adjustments and improvements in real time and this can dramatically increase
productivity in the long run.

2. Create Documentation
Not only AutoCAD helps you design stuff, but you can also add information such as specifications, details,
dimensions, material names, etc next to components. This helps manufacturers estimate costs and learn
exactly what they have to do when it comes to creating new products.

3. Data Can Be Saved

Another major advantage of AutoCAD is that everything is saved in the cloud in real time. It’s almost
impossible to lose information and this helps the manufacturing process greatly.

For example, you don't have to design the same piece twice. You can simply use a "copy-paste" technique
to add more identical components or use the same piece from one project to another.

4. Reduce Design Errors

One of the best things about AutoCAD is that it can help engineers identify problems and eliminate them
before the design is put into mass production. This program offers great visualization features which aids
in discovering errors and problems. By eliminating those errors right from the start, manufacturers save a
great deal of time, money and effort.
