TEXTOS Texto N° 3
The ability to perform motor activities, i.e. eye hand coordination, arm hand steadiness,
control precision multi limb coordination in relation to mental process is defined as
psychomotor ability.
Physical tasks that children in early childhood education perform help in psychomotor
development which in turn functions as a facilitator in personality development process.
Psychomotor development is the progressive acquisition of skills involving both mental
and motor activities. The tasks proposed for introducing in schools may be termed
“psychomotor tasks” because each of these tasks requires a child to think about the tasks
and then perform them. In the process child learns how to adjust socially and
emotionally because this can provide him/her with successful experiences and permit
interrelationships with other children and with a partner. This requires that a child will
be aware of other activities in which she/he shares space. He/she learns to wait for turns
and to cooperate. He/she thus develops social awareness and achieve satisfaction
through peer relationships and group activities.
Physical tasks like outdoor games also help in the growth of the child’s ability to make
and maintain friends and to develop mutually supportive relationships with others. It
helps in developing intelligent, responsible, self-directing individuals who can function
as members of various groups. Flexibility, empathy, communication skills and sense of
humor are other some attributes that may be developed through this kind of activities. –
