CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

The chapter starts with an introductory paragraph citing the different

parts or contents of the chapter.

INTRODUCTION

Education plays a significant role not only in society but also in

individuals. In the Philippines, DepEd and CHED hold an important role in the

education of students. DepEd and CHED are dedicated to their mission and

vision by ensuring that students receive a high-quality education. In order to

deliver their lessons efficiently, teachers experiment with various techniques

and methods. In response to DO 27, s. 2022 entitled “Conduct of Rapid

Assessment in School year 2021-2022 for Learning Recovery as well as in

Preparation for the 2021 Baseline System Assessment. It assure the quality of

learning, formative assessments shall be regularly conducted by the teachers.

The conduct of the above-mentioned national assessments in SY 2021-2022

will serve as a rapid assessment to identify learning gaps and to design

appropriate interventions, as well as preparation for establishing a new system

assessment baseline in 2024. But some student find difficulties in doing these

assessment, assignments and activities submitting on time. By these, This

result to pending works that lead to heavy workloads A study by Dervin and

Risquez (2019) found that a heavy workload leads to stress, burnout, and poor

academic performance among high school students. The Department of

Education (DepEd) issues the enclosed "An Order Updating the Implementing

Guidelines on the Conduct of the K to 12 Basic Education Program End-of-

School-Year (EOSY) Rites" as an amendment to and reissuance of DepEd

Order (DO) 2, s. 2020, entitled Multi- Year Implementing Guidelines on the

Conduct of the K to 12 Basic Education Program End-of-School-Year Rites,

which provides guidance to both public and private elementary and secondary

schools nationwide in the annual conduct of EOSY rites. DepEd Order No. 9,

s. 2023 aims to update the guidelines for conducting the EOSY rites to reflect

recent policy changes and accommodate new challenges and developments

in the educational landscape. The EOSY rites play a significant role in

recognizing learners who have successfully completed the curriculum

requirements and marking transitions to subsequent stages of education this

also push the student to encourage them to submit their tasks on time.

The researchers aim to examine the causes of senior high school student

inability to submit their outputs on time, by knowing these causes we could

map out an actionable solution to student, knowing the root will also help both

student and teacher to adjust themselves.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

For every person, education is vital. It serves as a tool to help us

be responsible in addition to emphasizing intelligence and achievement. It is

our responsibility as students to perform well in class, but how can we do that

if we don't take responsibility for our actions? Education is one of the most

powerful weapon in the world since it develops your skills, knowledge, and

critical thinking abilities. Being a responsible student means that you must be

able to manage your time well and refrain from putting off learning. This is

something that comes with being a student.

The online learning environment has a huge impact on the students ability in

completing tasks on time. This can cause emotions of disconnection and

loneliness. As a sense of community, it is important to maintain proximity and

a strong social presence to help aid student retention. For students to submit

on time, late point policies are being encouraged because this can be an early

warning sign of students nonpersistence (Santelli et al., 2020). Some students

procrastinate programming assignments. These students seems to struggle

whether or not if they program have met the required assignment. Both of

these factors play a crucial role to a students success with a negative impact

of on their grades but to be specific, a negative impact on learning (Bouvier et

al., 2021). Time management is very important for everyone especially for

students that it might have a huge impact for their academic performance and

achievements. Condusive settings and environment will have a positive

outcomes for students and being given lectures by their teachers. A good time

management is vital for students to shine. Bad time management may result to

a negative performance. The usage of time management can also affect

student stress level as they finish their tasks and personal achievements

(Shazia, N., Muhammad, S. K., 2019). Procrastination is not a problem just for

undergraduate students and it's effect to the academic performance of a

student is really a concern. The academic performance, the actual time

submission of assignments and the deadline imposed is all related. These

suggests that the earlier the assignment is submitted, the higher the grades

tend to be (Jones, I,. Blankenship, D,. 2021).

The researcher aims to comprehend the causes of students at Cardona Senior

High School submitting their work late. As a result, students will practice self-

discipline, their learning capacities will be improved, teachers lives will be

made easier by the students' timely submission of academic outputs.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The research aims to determine the causes of the late

submission of academic outputs by Grade 11 senior high school students. The

selected Grade 11 students of Cardona Senior High School who always

experience submitting their late academic outputs on time in the school year

2023-2024. However, the researcher was limited to the criteria set for student

respondents, namely: The students who do not always experience passing

their late academic output are not within the scope of this research.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This study is anchored in the theory of Deci & Ryan, entitled self-

determination. This theory explains the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations of

individuals. In the context of academic output, students who are intrinsically

motivated (they enjoy learning and find the task interesting) are more likely to

submit their work on time. On the other hand, students who are extrinsically

motivated (they are doing the task for a reward or to avoid punishment) may

be more likely to put off submitting their work until the last minute.

The self-determination theory can be related to the late

submission of academic outputs among senior high school

students by examining how factors such as autonomy,

competence, and relatedness influence their motivation and

ability to meet deadlines. For instance, students who feel a

sense of autonomy in their learning process may be more likely

to manage their time effectively and submit their outputs on time,

while those lacking autonomy may struggle to meet deadlines.

Similarly, feelings of competence and relatedness to the task or

their peers can also impact their motivation and timeliness in

submitting academic outputs.

This theory helps the researchers strengthen their knowledge regarding the

late submission of academic outputs by Grade 11 Senior High School

students.

ASSUMPTION

This study is based on the following assumptions:

1. The researchers assumed that lack of access to the internet is one of the

reasons why some senior high school students cannot pass their academic

outputs on time.

2. The researchers assumed that some grade 11 students have other

responsibilities inside and outside school, such as family responsibilities and

extracurricular activities that may influence their punctuality in submitting

academic outputs.

3. The researchers generate the assumption that the effectiveness of the

students' managing their time well could have a positive impact on their ability

to submit their academic outputs on time.

4. The researchers made the assumption that parents and teacher

connections may contribute to the students' ability to complete and submit

academic outputs on time.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Submission of Academic Outputs of Grade 11 Senior High School Students'

can be an important thing to tackle to.

For the students, this research can help them be heard, be understood, and

can give them consideration by the teachers for submitting their outputs late.

For the teachers, this will be a helpful thing to talk about so you will be able to

cognize the different causes of the students' inability to submit their outputs on

time.

This problem can be solve in different ways just like; time management,

consideration, get rid of distractions, simple than complex activity and

connection between parents' and teachers'.
