GRAIN CLEANING AND DOCKAGE DETERMINATION
Laboratory Exercise 1
I. OBJECTIVES
1. Familiarize with the process of grain
cleaning and dockage determination.
2. Perform grain cleaning and hulling on the
rice paddy samples.
3. Determine the different parameters
pertaining to rice paddy quality.
II. MATERIALS AND METHODS
Materials and Equipment:
uncleaned rice paddy, sieve #15, #40 and pan,
Digital/Analog weighing scale, Boerner sample
divider, inverted trays
Methods:
1. Pour the samples in the Boerner sample
divider to create 2 samples. Pour the 2
samples again separately to create a total
of 4 samples. Distribute the samples to the
4 groups in the class.
2. For each group, repeat step 1 again with
their sample to get 4 samples. Randomly
take 2 from the 4 samples and this will
represent the 2 trials. Record their
individual total weight. Place them in the
inverted trays.
3. Use the sieves and weighing scales to
determine the percent impurities by
determining the total weight of foreign
materials (stones, chaffs, etc) separated
from the sample using the formula:

4. Identify the percent impurities by

5. Perform manual hulling on the cleaned
grains using mortar and pestle. You may
use other methods as you see fit as long
as you can separate the hull from the grain
of rice.
6. Identify the percent unhulled paddy rice by
determining the total weight of unhulled
paddy rice separated from the sample
using the formula:

7. Identify the percent milled rice by
determining the total weight of milled rice/
cleaned grains separated from the sample
