JAGUAR

Habitat:

Its preferred habitats are usually swamps and wooded regions, but jaguars also live
in scrublands and deserts. Found from northern Mexico southward to northern Argentina.

Characteristics:

Typical coloration is orange to tan, with black spots arranged in rosettes with a black spot in the
centre. Along the midline of the jaguar’s back is a row of long black spots that may merge into
a stripe. The base colour of the jaguar varies greatly from white to black. Although brown and
black jaguars appear to be solid-coloured, spots are always faintly visible.

Is it endangered? Why?

Habitat loss and fragmentation, trophy hunting, the illegal trade in body parts, and retaliatory
killings stemming from the loss of livestock have reduced the jaguar’s geographic range and its
population.

The jaguar is virtually extinct in the northern part of its original range and survives in reduced
numbers only in remote areas of Central and South America; the largest
known population exists in the Amazon rainforest.

CHIMPANZEE:

Habitat:

Chimpanzees inhabit tropical forests and savannas of equatorial Africa from Senegal in the
west to Lake Albert and northwestern Tanzania in the east.

Characteristics:

chimpanzees stand approximately 1–1.7 metres (3–5.5 feet) tall when erect and weigh about
32–60 kg (70–130 pounds). Males tend to be larger and more robust than females.
Chimpanzees are covered by a coat of brown or black hair, but their faces are bare except for a
short white beard. Skin colour is generally white except for the face, hands, and feet, which are
black. The faces of younger animals may be pinkish or whitish. Among older males and
females, the forehead often becomes bald, and the back becomes gray.

Is it endangered? Why?

Chimpanzees are an endangered species; their population in the wild has been reduced by
hunting (primarily for meat), destruction of habitat from logging or farming, and commercial
exportation for use in zoos and research laboratories. The International Union for Conservation
of Nature (IUCN) noted that, despite having one of the largest geographic ranges of the great
apes, chimpanzee populations have fallen significantly since the 1980s.
HYENA:

Habitat:

savannas, grasslands, woodlands, forest edges, sub deserts and

mountains

Characteristics:

Hyenas have long forelegs and a powerful neck and shoulders for dismembering and carrying
prey. Hyenas are tireless trotters with excellent sight, hearing, and smell for locating carrion,
and they are proficient hunters as well. All hyenas are nocturnal. Intelligent, curious, and
opportunistic in matters of diet, hyenas frequently meet humans.

Is it endangered? Why?

Although the Spotted Hyena is currently categorised as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, the
population are known to be decreasing outside protected areas. Their status is threatened by
deforestation and hunting.

CHEETAH

Habitat:

Cheetahs are tolerant of a wide range of habitats including shrublands, grasslands, savannahs,
and temperate to hot deserts. Cheetahs largely stay on the ground but are known to climb
trees on occasion.

Characteristics:

Cheetahs have distinctive spots and black, tear-shaped stripes that stretch from the inner
corner of each eye to the mouth. Cheetahs have small, rounded heads, long necks, deep
chests and claws that are non-retractable. The legs of the cheetah are long, slim and
muscular. These factors allow the animal to travel at exceptional rates of speed.

Is it endangered? Why?

The Southern African cheetah is considered “vulnerable” and not “endangered” All are ideal
cheetah prey, and all are heavily hunted by people in many areas,

WILD BOAR

Habitat:

covers parts of Europe and Asia. Additionally, Wild boars have been introduced to South and
North America. Currently, these animals are considered invaders throughout the southeastern
United States and California. Wild boars live in forests, steppes, grasslands, wetlands and
venture onto farmlands to forage.
Characteristics:

Wild boars are built like domestic pigs, with bulky, thick-set bodies, long, mobile,
cartilaginous snouts, black hooves, and medium-length tails. They're usually dark brown or
black but can be a variety of colors and have thick skin covered with a coat of coarse hair.

Is it endangered? Why?

They are categorized by the least concern wild animal, so that means that they are not
endangered.
