million through National Pancake Day
and the IHOP Partnership. This year, we
hope to raise $650,000!
▪ Since December 4 th , IHOP stores have
sold icons to customers ‐ $1, $5, $10,$20,
and $100. The servers and managers
have been encouraging customers to
donate.
▪ The campaign culminates on National
Pancake Day, February 27 th .
▪ On National Pancake Day, IHOPs will
give out a free short stack of pancakes to
each customer. In lieu of payment, IHOP
is asking for a donation to LLS.
National Pancake Day 2017 Recap
• In 2017, IHOP raised over $610,000 with the
National Pancake Day campaign
• There were 128 IHOP locations across DC,
MD, VA, PA, DE & NJ that partnered with
LLS in 2017
• The funds raised help advance
breakthrough therapies and help save lives,
just like Max, our 2017 Honored Hero
• With your support we make the cure for
cancer not someday, but today

The funds you help raise have a significant impact!

Introducing the 2018 Honored Hero!
Lucy, age 5 , Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) Survivor
• Lucy was diagnosed with AML at just eight months old and was given a 50% chance of
survival
• After five months of successful inpatient treatment her cancer returned and ultimately had
cord blood stem cell transplant
• Now four years later, Lucy is happy, healthy, in remission, and living life to the fullest
• Depending on the day you ask her, Lucy either wants to be a doctor, teacher, or Minnie
Mouse when she grows up.
What to Expect on National Pancake Day?
• Wear comfortable but appropriate attire and comfortable shoes – you will be
standing during your shift. If you have an LLS shirt (Light The Night, Team in Training,
etc.) please wear it.
• Please arrive at your designated store 15 minutes prior to the beginning of your shift
to ensure a smooth shift change.
• Please leave all personal items in your car – IHOP cannot be held responsible for
anything misplaced, lost, or stolen.
• The most important part is to help collect donations for LLS!
• Bring positive energy and determination to help LLS and IHOP raise as much as
possible to support our mission. Every dollar counts!
• Please check with the store manager on how they would like you to collect donations.
They may ask you to ask customers as they enter or go from table to table.
• THANK EVERYONE WHO DONATES!
I’m the first shift – What do I need to know?
• First off, find and introduce yourself
to the store manager. Please thank
them on our behalf for their support!
• Look for signage for LLS on display
– each store should have a Honored
Hero poster and a Goal Poster.
• Check that the donation box is
present and displayed at the store’s
cash register by the entrance.
• Make sure you have blank credit
card authorization forms and
volunteer hours forms.
• If any of these items are not present,
please contact our volunteer
coordinator Julie Falls at (703)
399‐2912 and a LLS staffer will bring
your needed items ASAP.
Elevator Pitch: What to say to customers?
• “Are you enjoying your pancakes today? We are collecting donations for The
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in lieu of asking you to pay for your pancakes. Would
you like to contribute?”
• “Are you here supporting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society?...”
• “How did you hear about today’s event? Do you know it’s benefiting The Leukemia &
Lymphoma Society?”
• “Just wanted to let you know that we are collecting donations today for The Leukemia
& Lymphoma Society – there is a collection box by the register for anything you can
contribute.”
• If they ask, you can tell them that the average donation is $10.00.
• A lot of people are tied to cancer in some way – try to make it personal. Engaging
customers by sharing your story or asking them if they have a tie to the mission is a
great way to remind them of the fantastic work LLS does and how we need their help
to continue that work.
Elevator Pitch: Fast Facts
• In the Washington DC Metro Region there are currently
more than 25,000 people living with blood cancers and each
year there are more than 7,000 new local patients
diagnosed.
• Blood cancers are the number three cancer killer.
• Every 9 minutes, someone loses their battle with blood
cancer.
• Leukemia is the leading cause of cancer‐related deaths in
children and young adults under the age of 20.
What to do if a customer asks a
question you can’t answer…
• First, see if there is a LLS staff person on‐site – the LLS staff will be
rotating around the stores – you can first ask our staff and see if they
have the answer.
• If there is no staff member present or they do not know the answer,
call our office phone number – (703) 399‐2900. We will have a
member of our staff manning the phone for any inquiries.
• Also, you can direct customers to visit www.lls.org/nca for any
information related to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
What to do if…someone says they’d
love to donate but don’t have cash
Not a problem! Here’s what you can say:
• “That’s no problem! We have several other ways you can donate – you
can purchase an icon through your server, and the amount will be
added on to your bill, you can give us a check* or we do take credit
cards**.”
• * Made payable to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
• ** AMEX, Visa, MasterCard and Discover – credit card donation forms will be
available at each store.
My shift is over…what do I need
to do before I leave?
• Unless you are the last shift of the evening (7 PM – 10 PM) please stay until the
next volunteer has come for their shift. If no one arrives for the next shift,
please contact the LLS main office at (703) 399‐2900 and our staff will reach
out to the missing volunteers/advise you on how to proceed.
• Most important! – Turn in the donations you have collected to the
store manager. Volunteers should not leave with any cash, credit
card donation forms or checks.
• If you need a Volunteer Hours Form completed for service hours, please
contact Jenny Holmgrain at LLS.
• Find the store manager and thank them again for their support of LLS!
