 Define the following:

1. Dwarf planet: A heavenly body which resembles a planet but
does not fill the criteria to be one
2. Comet: A heavenly object that orbits the Sun
3. Asteroids: Small heavenly bodies that move around in space.
They are mostly found between the planets Jupiter and Mars
4. Terrestrial Planets: The first four planets that are near the Sun
5. Outer planets: The last four planets of our solar system
6. Orbits: The fixed paths on which the eight planets, along with
the dwarf planets, move around the Sun

10. Universe: All the galaxies considered together
11. Equator: An imaginary line that runs through the centre of the
Earth
12. Northern hemisphere: The half part of the Earth in the north
13. Southern hemisphere: The half part of the Earth in the south
14. Rotation: The movement of the Earth on its imaginary axis
15. Revolution: The movement of the Earth around the Sun in its
orbit

 Fill in the blanks:

1. Jupiter is the biggest planet.

2. Saturn is the sixth and the second largest planet.
3. The twinkling objects are known as stars.
4. A collection of stars, planets along with their moons, gases and
dust is called a galaxy.
5. Rotation is the movement of the Earth on its imaginary axis
which causes day and night.

 True or False:

1. The Earth is also called the blue planet. True

2. Venus is the smallest and the nearest planet to the Sun. False
3. Our galaxy is called the Milky Way. True
4. A heavenly object that orbits the Sun is called asteroids. False
5. A constellation is a group of stars. True

 Short answer questions:

1. What is the solar system?

Ans. The Sun, the eight planets and their moons along with small
bodies like dwarf planets, comets and asteroids form the solar
system.

2. Write the names of eight planets in increasing order of their

distance from the Sun.
Ans. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and
Neptune

3. What are stars?

Ans. The twinkling objects in the night sky are called stars.

4. What is the movement of the Earth on its imaginary axis called?

Ans. The spinning movement of the Earth on its own axis is called
rotation.

5. What causes seasons?

Ans. The revolution of the Earth around the Sun causes seasons.

 Long answer questions:

1. What are satellites? Why is the moon called the natural

satellite of the Earth?

Ans. The satellites are heavenly bodies that revolve around a

planet in an orbit. The moon is called the natural satellite of the
Earth because it revolves around the Earth.

2. What is the difference between rotation and revolution?

Ans. Rotation is the movement of a planet on its own axis.

Revolution is the movement of a planet around the Sun on an
orbit.
