Ultranationalism Research Project - International Human Rights Museum

Addressing ultranationalism wherever it takes hold requires an

international response, and yet this is a very difficult task for the
international community to undertake successfully. Ultranationalism is
alive and growing throughout the world; it exists anywhere where a
population of people is experiencing subjugation or persecution based
on their ethnicity, culture or religion. This task asks you to examine an
example of ultranationalism and put together an exhibit for an
International Human Rights Museum. Your final project will be on
display in a Gallery Walk where you will share your learning with your
peers.

Part A: Research Notes

You will be required to submit your research notes (complete with your sources properly cited) and your final project. All
research notes should be summarized and paraphrased into your own words and should address the research questions
below.

Research Questions:

RI #2: Analyze the relationship between nationalism and ultranationalism

● Who are the victims/targets of ultranationalism? Who is perpetrating ultranationalism?

● What underlying national interests exist?
● What causes led to the rise of ultranationalism?
● How are the 10 Stages of Genocide represented in your case study?
● Be sure to include primary sources (firsthand accounts)

RI #3: To what extent was/is the international response effective at finding resolution to your case study?

● What is/was the international response? (If it is/was limited, be able to explain why this was the case)
● What were/are the motives for international response? What challenges hindered an international response?
● What international laws/conventions are/were relevant during this crisis?
● What were the outcomes of the international response?
● What other international organizations were involved in this crisis?

Part B: Museum Exhibit Requirements

As you prepare for your exhibit, think about how you can creatively engage with your audience. DO NOT MAKE A
POSTER! How can you compellingly present your information that connects with your audience? Play to your strengths
and be creative. Ensure that you include the following:
● Data presented in a visual medium - artifact, maps, photographs, QR codes to videos, infographic, etc.
● Primary Sources (personal accounts)
● Information on Canada’s Involvement
● A legitimate charity or way for people to donate/engage further with this issue

Part C: Rationale
You will need to submit a (maximum) one page write-up explaining your project. Answer the following questions in your
write-up:
● What aspects of ultranationalism does your project focus on?
● How did you incorporate those aspects in your museum exhibit? (Ensure you explain the choices you made for
your museum exhibit)
