Job Reports To: Lead Operator - Maintenance

No direct reports but may give instruction in routine duties to junior Operators,
Directly Reporting to this Job:
apprentices, and Waterworks Labourers as assigned.

Function/Purpose:
The Water Treatment Plant Electrician is responsible for all maintenance of the Water Section electrical
equipment in compliance with applicable codes, policies and regulations. Key responsibility is for the
continued safe and reliable performance and operation of water section electrical assets, and to ensure
compliance to established policies and procedures, OH&S, and the AENV Approval to Operate.

Duties, Responsibilities Specific Demands of the Job


1. Day-to-Day Operating Responsibilities
Within the limits of authorized policies and procedures, is responsible for and has authority to
accomplish the following:
a. Ensure that all maintenance and preventative maintenance of Water Section electrical asserts is
performed, the work is recorded in the appropriate databases and equipment logs, and comply
with all applicable regulations, policies and procedures
b. Provides technical support for Project Coordinator, contractors, suppliers, engineers and
operations staff to monitor and evaluate new installations of electrical systems, electrical
equipment specifications, compatibility, and process control equipment
c. Provides input to the annual preventative maintenance schedule and budgets. Recommends
equipment upgrades or replacement.
d. Maintain parts inventories of equipment and supplies to ensure reliable operation of all primary
and back up equipment.
e. Assist in preparing equipment specifications for purchase orders, obtaining supply quotations
and evaluating supplier bids
f. Recommends improvements or modifications to existing equipment, and will perform or assist
with the design and installation of equipment.
g. Review and update all blueprints and schematics to ensure electrical and facility documentation
is current and accurate
h. Participates in and supports all Heath and Safety programs and initiatives such as inspections,
meetings, hazard assessments, incident tracking and emergency drills

i. Provides technical support for Project Coordinator, contractors, suppliers, engineers and
operations staff to confirm equipment specifications and electrical compatibility, and to monitor
and evaluate new installations of electrical systems
j. Provides technical support for senior staff to perform trouble shooting, monitoring, testing and
electrical service work
k. This position will support Asset Management activities including data entry,
l. Participating and supporting training on existing, revised or new procedures with new or existing
plant staff.
m. Assist in the development and implementation of SOP’s, schedules and work plans for all
maintenance activities, including training and support of staff assigned to assist with minor and
routine tasks
n. Receives work assignments, service priorities and other duties as assigned by the lead operator
Minimum Requirements
1. Education: Grade 12 or equivalent
2. Certification (courses, etc.):
a. Master Journeyman Electrician (or must achieve Masters within one year of hire)
b. Vendor training/certification in specialised equipment or procedures as required
c. Must successfully pass all safety certificate courses currently required and others to be
defined by the Province or by the City
3. Current requirements:
d. Fire Alarm System Maintenance Certification / Basic Scaffold Competency Inspections:
Frame Scaffold Certification / Overhead Crane Operator Training 1 Certificate / Fall Arrest /
Hazard Assessment / WHIMIS / 1st AID/CPR / Confined Space / Valid Class 5 Drivers
License
4. Work Experience:
e. 5 years (minimum) industrial plant electrical maintenance experience, preferably in a Water
Treatment Plant or comparable production or process environment
5. Supervisory Skills:
f. 1 year preferable for mentoring apprentices
6. Special Skills:
g. High voltage power systems experience
h. Experience working with work order and maintenance management systems
i. Ability to work effectively and safely under pressure when performing emergency repairs
j. Well developed verbal and written communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills
k. Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised and co-operate with colleagues as a team, to
understand and follow instructions and to provide guidance and instructions to operators,
apprentices or Waterworks labourers

l. Demonstrated mechanical aptitude


m. Strong computer aptitude including demonstrated proficiency with databases, spreadsheets
and word-processing software
n. Must be physically fit in order to climb ladders, work at heights, open and close valves, lift,
shovel, bend and twist in awkward positions
o. Ability to work inside and outside in all types of weather and in conditions which may be
noisy, dirty, wet, cold, hot and disagreeable
p. Ability to exercise care when working near traffic, when working with power tools etc
q. Be able to read and understand blueprints, drawings, schematics and maps
Specific Demands of the Job
ƒ This position may have significant impact on public health and safety. The electrician is
responsible for accurate, reliable performance of water section electrical equipment and could
have personal liability exposure in the event of a loss or contamination of the public water supply
ƒ This position requires knowledge in a wide range of electrical and building systems including;
various high (4160V to 120V) voltage systems, and low voltage systems, generators, variable
frequency drives, MCC, HMI, PLC, HVAC systems, fire alarm systems, process systems, and
security systems.
ƒ The Electrician maintains and reports on the Annual City Electrical permit
ƒ The Electrician may be called out after normal working hours for emergency repairs
ƒ All work activities must comply with corporate and regulatory requirements and be completed to
the appropriate trade and workmanship quality standards
ƒ This position requires working near to hazardous chemicals on a daily basis. Other hazards are
not limited to but include electrocution, drowning, working with rotating equipment and in
confined spaces. Some activities will require the use safety harnesses and other safety equipment.
ƒ Staying current on electrical code and technology
