SMALL APPARATUS
▪ may be used in as infinite a variety of ways as exist and
may be contained within a Physiotherapy Department.
▪ Basically three things may be done with any piece of
small apparatus.
▪ One can 'get rid' of it, 'receive' it or 'hang on' to it.

5/1/2022 5
▪ It is the permutations of these three
factors with weight and size and material,
their relationship to other people or
objects, obstructions, distance and
direction, that produces the variety of
exercise.
5/1/2022 6
SOFT APPARATUS
1. Soft balls
2. Rolls
3. Wedges
4. Silicone putty
5/1/2022 7
LARGE APPARATUS
▪ Space consuming
▪ Good organization is necessary for it’s use

▪ Patients should be constantly aware of it’s dangers.

BOLSTER
▪ A bolster is a long narrow pillow or cushion filled with cotton, down
or fibre. Bolsters are usually firm for back or arm support.
▪ Uses :
▪ For strengthening of last degree knee extensors
▪ For back support
▪ For yoga
▪ To make a child with knees apart
5/1/2022 10
▪ Patients can lie across them or sit astride them, both these positions being useful
for controlling spasticity in the areas which initiate rocking movements,
▪ thus helping to re-educate
▪ balance,
▪ co-ordination and
▪ body awareness
▪ as the roll moves backwards and forwards.
▪ Patients can also use their legs and feet to propel themselves forward or backward
along the roll as they sit astride it

MEDICINE BALLS
▪ Weighted balls which are used for strengthening of
upper limb muscles
▪ The medicine ball also serves an important role in
the field of sports medicine to improve strength
and neuromuscular coordination. It is distinct from
the inflated exercise ball, which is larger (up to 36"
diameter).

THERABAND
▪ A theraband or resistance bands are latex bands
or tubes that are used for physical therapy and
light strength training exercises.
▪ They are also commonly used by athletes, but also
people who are looking for a low-impact strength
training workout.

SWISS BALLS
An exercise ball can be used in a number of
applications with a range of difficulty levels, and the
benefits for back pain patients can be felt at each
level.
Just sitting on a swiss ball alone engages the key
stabilisers, the abdominal and back muscles.

▪ Balance
▪ co-ordination and body awareness may also be re-educated using
the larger balls as a support.
▪ The therapist may rock the balls in various directions as the patient
tries to maintain his position, or movement of the ball may be
initiated by the patient himself making slight shifts in body weight.
▪ More advanced patients who are younger may enjoy trying to jump
along the floor whilst maintaining their balance sitting astride the
ball, but the therapist must ensure that the feet can comfortably
reach the floor in case the patient loses his balance.

▪ The plantar flexors and dorsi-flexors of the ankle may be
strengthened by walking either up or down the incline, and the
pliability of the foam promotes interplay between the invertors and
evertors of the foot.
▪ Wedges also provide a soft surface for the stimulation of
proprioception in the soles of the feet.
▪ Wedges and rolls can be used in the same treatment area to provide
a continuous uneven surface along which patients may crawl or walk,
so providing a means of balance training in preparation for the
uneven surfaces muscle groups can be strengthened by walking
side. 5/1/2022 44
