NEWS

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

There are different kinds of news structures. The most common among
them are diagrammed and explained as follows:

1. Straight News: This type follows the inverted pyramid structure as it

answers the most prominent W’s of the story. The news reporter identifies
the most important details and include them in the summary lead. The
body of the story, written in diminishing importance includes elaboration
of other W’s and the H. It consists of short sentences, not more than 35
simple, easy-to-understand words.
2. Action News: This is a narrative involving not merely simple
facts, but dramatic actions about a fire or accident or police report. It
usually contains description of persons, perhaps testimonies of witnesses,
as well as explanatory data.

In writing this kind of story, first write a summarizing lead in any appropriate
form. Relate the most important details in narrative or chronological form. Tell
the story again giving more details. Give sufficient attention to the elaboration of
important information, background and interpretation of witnesses. Each unit
must be closely interlocked.

3. Quotation/Quoted News (interview or speech): All quotations should be clear,

concise, relevant and effective. Writers should ramble through their stockpile
of quotes and choose only the best to include in the news story.
Use direct quotations to record the opinions, emotions, and unique
expressions of your sources. The lead may be a summarizing statement— the gist
of the speech or the most important quotation in the story as a direct quote.
REMEMBER •

• News articles are written in a structure generally known as the inverted
pyramid where the most newsworthy information goes at the beginning,
and less important details at the end of the story.
• The lead or the first paragraph contains a short, simple statement that
provides focus to the news story.
• Reporters do not include their opinion in news writing.
