PHYSICS/ ENGINEERING PHYSICS
TIME : 2 HOURS MAX MARKS : 50
TOTAL NO OF QUESTIONS: 03 TOTAL NO OF PRINTED PAGES: 02
INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES:
1. Assume suitable data wherever necessary
2. Non programmable scientific calculators are allowed
3. Black figures to the right indicate full marks

1 a) What is meant by De-Broglie Wave? Explain the [5] CO4 L2

different terms used in mathematical expression of
De-Broglie wavelength.
b) A one-dimensional particle of mass 10-25 Kg and [10] CO4 L3
length 10-1 m is having instantaneous velocity of
108msec-1 at any given instant of time. Considering
non-relativistic case only, determine if this particle
would exhibit wave nature or particle nature at the
abovementioned instant of time? Justify your answer
with reasons.
[Hint: In non-relativistic case, particle’s mass is
supposed to be constant irrespective of the particle’s
velocity. The comparison of wavelength and size of
particle would decide on the behaviour of particle
being as of wave or particle.]

2 a) What do you understand by Heisenberg’s [5] CO4 L2
Uncertainty Principle? Explain the different terms
used in its mathematical expression.
b) Consider a particle travelling to the right direction [10] CO5 L3
along x-axis with energy E. The potential energy is
zero for x<0 , but at x=0 there is a potential step and
the potential energy increases to (positive )Vo for x>0.
Assuming that E>V, discuss the similarities and
differences between the behaviours of the particle if
we consider it (A) a classical particle and (B) a
quantum particle.
c) Why energy of a trapped quantum particle is [8] CO5 L3
quantized? An electron is in a box of 1.9nm wide which
is the order of magnitude of atomic dimensions. Find
its permitted energy for n=1& n=2.
3 a) An experimentalist wishes to remove an electron from [5] CO6 L2
the atom to which it is bound by sending the single
photon to collide with it. The binding energy of the
electron is 6.05eV. what is the maximum wavelength of
the light necessary to remove the electron?
b) Write a short note on Einsten Coefficients. [7] CO6 L2
