Content: Ethical Standards in Writing a Literature Review

Time Allotment: 1:50 hours (November 6-10, 2023)

Content Standard
The learner demonstrates understanding of:
1. Criteria in selecting, citing, and synthesizing related literature
2. Ethical standards in writing related literature
3. Formulation of conceptual framework
4. Research hypotheses
5. Definition of terms as used in the study

Performance Standard
The learner is able to:
1. Select, cite, and synthesize judiciously related literature and use sources according to
ethical standards.
2. Formulate clearly conceptual framework, research hypotheses and define terms in the
study.
3. Present objectively written review of related literature and conceptual framework.

Learning Competency
Follows ethical standards in writing related literature (CS_RS12-If-j-5).

I. Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to:

1. Apply ethical standards in writing a literature review.

II. Subject Matter

Wiley-Blackwell, 2009.

- Cooperative and Collaborative Learning
III. Learning Tasks/Procedures
a. Preliminary Activities
- Classroom Management
- Checking of Attendance
Lesson Proper
b. Motivation
Let the students answer the question “How does ethics guide a researcher in writing?

c. Activity

Find a partner for this pair activity. As a pair, discuss the things which you think must be
avoided when doing a literature review.

d. Abstraction

After the activity, the students reflect on their responses about the lesson. Ethical standards
guide the researcher in knowing the right and wrong ways in constructing the synthesis of
literature sources.

Ethical standards are based on general research ethics that tackles the “dos” and “don’ts” in
conducting a research project.

Dos
Collect relevant literature sources.
Review the data presented and extr
act essential information.
Summarize the essential informatio
n from each source using your own
words.
Dos
Paraphrase the contents of the sou
rce while retaining the main thoug
hts of the content.
Attribute ideas accordingly by provi
ding in-text and bibliographic citati
ons.

Dos
Provide complete and correct infor
mation of the literature sources in
the bibliography.

Don’ts
Avoid main use of secondary sourc
e literature.
Avoid directly copying the content
of the literature source.

Don’ts
Avoid directly using the tables and
figures presented in the literature s
ource.
Avoid redirecting the main idea of t
he literature and including your ow
n perspective on the topic.

Don’ts
Avoid missing relevant citations in t
he literature review.
Avoid providing incomplete or wro
ng information of the literature so
urce in the bibliography.
Plagiarism refers to the “act of copying or using works from another person and
presenting it as your own”.

Consequences:
In the Philippines, the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines or R.A. no. 8293 protects
the intellectual works and property of people such as books and inventions through registered
copyrights.

Direct Plagiarism

Inadequate Paraphrasing

Self-Plagiarism

Incomplete Citations

Academic credibility is crucial in the field of research. Committing plagiarism can

severely damage the academic credibility of the author which could influence the
validity and overall reception of the scholarly work.

Avoiding Plagiarism
REMEMBER:

Plagiarism refers to the “act of copying or using works from another person and presenting it
as your own.”

Common types of plagiarism include direct plagiarism, inadequate paraphrasing, self-

plagiarism, and incomplete citations.

e. Application

1. Explain how the can the given practice help avoid plagiarism: Adding in-text
citations.

f. Assessment

1. Explain how the can the given practice help avoid plagiarism: Providing complete and
accurate reference entries.
2. Explain the possible consequences of putting false citations.
3.

C. Did the remedial lessons work? No. of learners who Yes

have caught up with the lesson

D. No. of learners who continue to require remediation None

E. Which of my teaching strategies worked well? Why did Giving motivations and activities. In this case, it worked well
these work? because they cooperate and had fun in learning.
F. What difficulties did I encounter which my principal or For now, None so far.
supervisor can help me solve?

G. What innovation or localized materials did I Maybe, by giving or sharing them my Powerpoint Presentation
