 I. INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background
In the rapidly evolving digital landscape, Social Networking Sites
(SNS) have become integral to modern communication. Originating in the
early 2000s with platforms like Friendster and MySpace, SNS such as
Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have transformed the way individuals
connect globally. These platforms offer users virtual spaces to express
themselves, share content, and establish connections, fundamentally altering
personal and societal interactions.
The appeal of SNS lies in their ability to transcend geographical
boundaries, allowing users to curate online identities and engage in real-time
conversations. Beyond personal use, these platforms have played a significant
role in shaping communication dynamics and influencing public opinion
during socio-political events. However, the widespread use of SNS has also
given rise to challenges, including privacy concerns, cyberbullying, and the
spread of misinformation.
This paper aims to explore the multifaceted landscape of SNS, delving
into their historical evolution, societal implications, impact on individual
behaviors, and the challenges they present. By critically assessing their role
in contemporary society, we can contribute to informed discussions on their
future development and regulation, seeking a balance between their benefits
and drawbacks.

 II. DISCUSSION OF THE MATERIAL

2.1. Definition
We define social network sites as web-based services that enable
individuals to create a public or semi-public profile within a confined system,
articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and view
and navigate their list of connections and those made by others within the
system. The nature and terminology of these connections may vary from one
site to another [1].
Although we use the term "social network site" to depict this
phenomenon, the term "social networking sites" is also prevalent in public
discourse, and these two terms are often used interchangeably. We opted not
to use the term "networking" for two reasons: emphasis and scope.
"Networking" places emphasis on relationship initiation, often between
strangers. While networking is feasible on these sites, it is not the primary
practice on many of them, nor does it distinguish them from other forms of
computer-mediated communication.

2.2. Impacts of social networking sites

Social networking is definitely one of the biggest parts of the lives
of each and every individual right now and this is why it cannot be ignored
at all. One question that has been bothering a number of individuals for a
long time is whether social media is good for society?
Like every other thing, there are positive effects of social media as
well as negative impacts on society. However, a number of sources say that
the positives of social media outweigh the negative impacts. This fact is
important considering the number of people who engage into this type of
communication. According to Hootsuite, 69% of the adults from the United
States make use of at least one social networking site.

Positive effect of social media
This article will walk through numerous positive effects of social media and
how each of these is impacting users globally for the better. The list of social
media positives includes:
a. Made it easy to make friends
A big positive effect of social media is that it is easier to make a large
number of friends within a short time only. Just a few years ago, it
wasn’t really easy to connect with many people, until and unless you
were extremely outgoing and could make conversations with almost
everyone you would just meet.
b. Social media helps in fostering empathy
It is important to know that they generally care and will also
empathize with your situations. They are going to listen to most of
what you are saying and also help you to deal with the problems that
you are currently facing. The important point here is that when you
are sharing your good and bad experiences on different social
networking sites, you may find other persons who empathize with
you.
c. Social media helps in speedy communication
Finding regular free time is troublesome at the best of times for most
people, especially when managing both your work as well as family
commitments. However, each and every social networking site is
responsible for offering a chance of communicating with one
another in an efficient as well as speedy manner, especially in the
generation where everyone has knowledge about using social media
platforms and other time-saving feats, such as social media slang.
d. Social media helps in building relationships
Social helps you to get back in touch with those people, with whom
you have lost contact from years back. You can even build a
relationship with a person with whom you have numerous things in
common. It can be rightly said that social media is one of the best

 grounds where long-lasting relationships can start. Whether it is
friendship or love, social media will help you to nurture your
relationship, which is extremely positive [2].
Negative effect of social media
You might be surprised to learn that the negative effects of social media are
both physical and mental. They can change your perception of the world and
yourself. While social media does have some positive effects, and there are
certainly positive social media stories, it also has a lot in the drawback
column. The list of social media negatives includes:
a. Depression and Anxiety
Do you spend several hours per day browsing through social media?
Spending too long on social networking sites could adversely affect
your mood. In fact, chronic social users are more likely to report
poor mental health, including symptoms of anxiety and depression.
b. Cyberbullying
While social media makes it easier to meet new people and make
friends, it also enables cruel people to tear into others with little
effort. Perpetrators of bullying can use the anonymity that (some)
social networks provide to gain people's trust and then terrorize them
in front of their peers. For instance, they might create a fake profile
and act friendly to a classmate, then later betray and embarrass them
online.
c. Unhealthy Sleep Patterns
Another bad thing about social media is that spending too much time
on it can lead to poor sleep. Numerous studies have shown that
increased use of social media has a negative effect on your sleep
quality. If you feel that your sleep patterns have become irregular,
leading to a drop in productivity, try to cut down on the amount of
time you browse social media.
d. Negative Body Image

 It's really important to remember that everybody is human. No one
wakes up every day looking like a supermodel, and while many
people have gone to great lengths to train their bodies, that's not the
case for everyone who looks fit. Many people, in search of social
media fame, have definitely taken unhealthy routes to appear more
attractive [3].

2.3. Q.S Al-Hujurat Verse 12

‫ض ُكم بَ ْعضا‬
ُ ‫سوا َو َل يَ ْغتَب بَّ ْع‬
ُ ‫س‬ َّ ‫ظ ِن ِإثْ ًۭم ۖ َو َل ت َ َج‬ َّ ‫ض ٱل‬َ ‫ظ ِن ِإ َّن بَ ْع‬ َّ ‫يَـٰٓأَيُّ َها ٱ َّلذِينَ َءا َمنُوا ٱ ْجتَنِبُوا َكث ًِۭيرا ِمنَ ٱل‬
١٢ ‫اب َّرحِ ًۭيم‬ َ َّ ‫ّلل ِإ َّن ٱ‬
ًۭ ‫ّلل ت ََّو‬ َ َّ ‫أَيُحِ بُّ أ َ َحدُ ُك ْم أَن َيأ ْ ُك َل لَ ْح َم أَخِ ي ِه َمي ًْۭتا فَك َِر ْهت ُ ُموهُ َوٱتَّقُوا ٱ‬

O believers! Avoid many suspicions, ˹for˺ indeed, some suspicions are sinful.
And do not spy, nor backbite one another. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of
their dead brother? You would despise that!1 And fear Allah. Surely Allah is ˹the˺
Accepter of Repentance, Most Merciful.
The utilization of social networking technologies and telecommunications
has both positive and negative impacts. One of the positive effects is the
strengthening of connections among individuals who are far apart, but there are also
negative consequences such as hate speech. Hate speech is an act that attacks
individuals or groups with a tone of hatred, causing wounds that are difficult to heal
and can damage interpersonal relationships, familial bonds, and brotherhood. In the
Quran, the story of Pharaoh, who met his demise due to his expressions of hatred,
serves as a valuable lesson about the dangers of spreading hate speech. The
messages in the Quran teach us not to harbor hatred towards others, as emphasized
in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 12 [4].

3.1. Conclusion
In summary, social network sites, crucial to modern life, enable profile
creation and connection-building. While the terms "social network site" and
"social networking sites" are used interchangeably, the former is chosen to avoid
emphasizing relationship initiation. Positive impacts include easy friend-making,
empathy fostering, efficient communication, and relationship building. However,
negative effects like mental health issues, cyberbullying, disrupted sleep patterns,
and negative body image perceptions must not be overlooked. Addressing these
drawbacks and striking a balance in social media use is crucial for ensuring its
positive contributions to societal well-being while minimizing potential harm.

In conclusion, the integration of social network sites into modern life has
transformed communication and relationships. Defined as web-based services
facilitating profile creation and connection-building, these platforms play a crucial
role. While positive impacts include easy friend-making, empathy fostering, and
efficient communication, negative effects like mental health issues and
cyberbullying must be acknowledged. Achieving a balance in social media use is
essential to maximize its positive contributions to society while mitigating
potential harm, emphasizing the importance of addressing drawbacks for overall
societal well-being.

3.2. Suggestion
In conclusion, social network sites, defined as web-based platforms
facilitating profile creation and connection-building, play a crucial role in modern
communication. While the terms "social network site" and "social networking
sites" are often used interchangeably, the former was chosen to avoid emphasizing
relationship initiation. The impacts of these platforms are substantial, offering
positive effects such as easy friend-making, empathy fostering, speedy
communication, and relationship building. However, the negative consequences,
including mental health issues, cyberbullying, disrupted sleep patterns, and
negative body image perceptions, should not be disregarded.

As we navigate the complex landscape of social media, it is essential to

strike a balance between reaping its positive benefits and mitigating potential
harms. To enhance the positive impact of social networking, individuals should be
mindful of their usage, promoting responsible and healthy online interactions.
Additionally, the development and implementation of robust policies and features
within social media platforms can contribute to creating a safer and more positive
online environment. Continuous awareness and education about the potential risks
and benefits of social media are vital to empower users in making informed
choices for their well-being in this digital age.
