4. Montgomery, Alabama, is not only famous for the bus boycott that shook the city in the
1950s. The state capital was also the first capital of the pro-slavery south during the Civil
War. More than fifty percent of the population of over 200,000 are black. Martin Luther
King, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, was a church minister in Montgomery
from 1954 to 1960. He was murdered in 1968.
