Introduction

Never has the state of scientific and technological knowledge been so expansive as it is today. We
can see proof of this in the flood of technical publications, which are reportedly doubling in
number in the space of less than ten years. This situation offers enormous opportunities for
innovation — and also great challenges — to translators and interpreters. The status of “many of
the world’s translators’ work on scientific or technical texts” (p. 2) demonstrates the real need for
scientific and technical translation (STT) and its undeniably important role in the age of ongoing
industrial-scale translation.

Nevertheless, the activity of STT has not acquired the attention it deserves “if one compares it
with the insights that have been gained from theorizing and analysing the translation of
canonical literary and religious texts” (Olohan 2013, 425). In light of this, the publication of
Maeve Olohan’s Scientific and Technical Translation is particularly timely for its exploration of
this marginalized topic, and certainly serves as a welcome complement to the Routledge
Translation Guide Literary Translation (Wright 2016). This book offers a representative reflection
of her work over the years, including her in-depth exploration of STT, translation technologies,
translation project management and professional ethics, among other topics. It capably shows
the environments in which scientific and technical translators work, and addresses how
advanced translation technologies can be applied to typical technical and scientific genres.

Introducción

El estado del conocimiento científico y tecnológico nunca ha sido tan expansivo como en la
actualidad. Prueba de ello es la avalancha de publicaciones técnicas, cuyo número se ha
duplicado en menos de diez años. Esta situación ofrece enormes oportunidades de innovación -y
también grandes retos- a traductores e intérpretes. La necesidad real de la traducción científica
y técnica (STT)* y su innegable importancia en la era de la traducción industrializada están
demostradas por el hecho de que "muchos de los traductores del mundo trabajan con textos
científicos o técnicos" (p. 2).

Sin embargo, "si se compara con los conocimientos obtenidos de la teorización y el análisis de la
traducción de textos literarios y religiosos canónicos" (Olohan 2013, 425), la actividad de la STT
no ha recibido la atención que merece. En vista de ello, la publicación de “Scientific and
Technical Translation” de Maeve Olohan es de especial relevancia por su exploración de esta
área de estudio tan marginada, y sin duda constituye un valioso complemento a la “Routledge
Translation Guide Literary Translation” (Wright 2016). Este libro ofrece un retrato representativo
de su trabajo a lo largo de los años, incluyendo su investigación en profundidad de la STT, las
tecnologías de traducción, la gestión de proyectos de traducción y la ética profesional, entre
otros temas, donde además demuestra hábilmente los distintos entornos en los que trabajan los
traductores científicos y técnicos, y aborda el modo en que las tecnologías de traducción
avanzadas pueden aplicarse a los géneros técnicos y científicos típicos.
