TOPIC PRESENTATION

Topic No. 1

I. General Subject Area: Sports Equipment

II. Specific Topic: Development of Automatic Shuttlecock Feeder for Badminton Training

III. Definition of the Topic

A. Importance and Significance (Rationale)

In the world of sports, different games have their own specific rules. These games are
usually physical activities that are done either by individuals or teams for leisure, entertainment
and as well as to compete against one another. Part of the culture and one way of communicating
with other countries is through sports which affects a person’s attributes like endurance, agility,
speed, stamina, etc. In every game, training is essential. The players attend a competition to test
their skills and compete for the title. Through the guidance of a coach or trainer, the athlete's
skills could enhance. There are different sports widely known for having a strong influence such
as basketball, volleyball, football, tennis, badminton, etc. (Ekinde, 2017)[1].
Badminton is a complex and extremely demanding sport. Thus, making this sport very
challenging not only for players but also for coaches. In playing competitive badminton, an elite
skill of agility, flexibility, endurance, speed, and strength at a high state of concentration are
required to win a game. Athlete’s stamina is a crucial factor for winning a badminton game
because fitness is necessary to execute and sustain these movements such as strokes, footwork
and shot placements(Ozmen, 2015)[2].

Due to this, the idea of developing a prototype that can help train athletes to enhance their
speed and agility with the help of an automatic shuttlecock throwing machine, which
automatically shoots shuttlecocks at a trajectory and in an oscillating movement.

B. Manageability (Scope and Limitation)

This study will focus on the development of the automatic shuttlecock feeder for
badminton purposes.

There are 4 tubes that will serve as a storage that will be installed at the top of the
machine with one tube aligned with the loading and launching mechanism and equipped with an
inductive sensor to detect if a certain tube is empty so it can move to the next tube storage. The
loading mechanism will have 2 rotating arms which will load the shuttlecock from the storage to
the launcher, it will also be equipped with inductive sensor to identify if the next shuttlecock will
be loaded to the launcher. The launcher has two oppositely rotating wheels that will launch the
shuttlecock into trajectory. It is also powered by stepper motors and controlled by micro
controller. The process will be repeated as planned in the badminton training.

C. Availability of Resources (Sources of Information)

The information needed in developing the project will come from various internet
articles, reference books, journals and other sources.

IV. Expected Output

General Objective:

The general objective of this study is to develop an automatic shuttlecock feeder for
badminton training.

Specific Objectives:

1. Design an automatic shuttlecock feeder for badminton with the following

features:
a. inductive sensor to load the shuttlecock to the launcher;
b. launching speed that varies depending on its difficulty and;
c. remote controller that will be used to operate the prototype.

2. Fabricate the prototype based on design specifications.

3. Test the prototype in terms of launching speed, range of shuttlecock trajectory
and shuttlecock loading speed.
4. Evaluate the performance of the prototype in terms of workability,
functionality, safety, aesthetics, and economy.
