located in Himachal Pradesh, India near famous tourist destination Bir Billing. Experience a

journey back in time as you ride on trolleys that were procured in 1932 for the Shanan

Hydroelectric Power Project and are still in operation today.

In 1925, Raja Jogindrasen envisioned a bold project to harness the power of water to generate

electricity near the village of Sakrahati. With the help of English engineer Karnel Batty and his

team, a tunnel was constructed to bring water from the Uhl river in Barot to Joginder Nagar. A

pipeline was laid through the tunnel to the Shanan Power House, where the water was used to

generate electricity.

To support the construction of the Power House, trolley lines were built from Shanan to Barot to

transport construction materials and machinery. A narrow railway line was also established from

Pathankot to Joginder Nagar’s Shanan to bring in heavy machinery imported from Britain. A

trolley route was created with the assistance of iron ropes to carry goods from Shanan to Barot.
In 1932, the construction of the Shanan Power House was completed, making Joginder Nagar the

only city in Asia with three simultaneous hydroelectric projects. The city’s economy received a

boost when the water from the Shanan Power House was used to build a power plant in Bassi in

1970. Joginder Nagar became a popular city both domestically and internationally for its

innovative and cost-effective hydroelectric projects.

Nevertheless, the Shanan Power House continues to provide electricity to Punjab and Delhi at a

low cost, making it one of the most successful hydroelectric projects in the country.Haulage

trolley details.

These trolleys are a truly unique mode of transportation, with a small cabin at the front that can

seat four people and an open space in the back for carrying materials and passengers.

Embark on an exciting journey from Jogindar Nagar to Barot, stopping at four stations along the

way.

2nd station – Winch Camp

3rd station – Headgear

4th Station – Barot

The trolleys are attached to a metal rope that is not powered by an any electric motor, its running

on the principle of pully and are moved up and down the railway line. The journey is controlled

by a driver who has a copper stick that he uses to ring a bell in the control room, which stops or

starts the tram trolly.

At the second station, riders must switch to another trolley and continue to Winch Camp, located

at the top of a hill at 9,000 ft. From there, they must walk 2 km to reach the third station, Head

Gear. This strech is flat rail leveled route which earlier trolly pulled by human to reach Headgear,

now this route rails is broken at few points. The stretch between Head Gear and Kaphyadu has a

slope of 75 degrees and is called Khoonee Ghatee.

This journey is not only unique and interesting but also offers breathtaking views of the jungle

and steep climbs along the way.

rail line until reaching the Headgear. Another option is to take a gentler trek through the village

and the Betty House (Government Guest House), which provides a clear path until reaching the

Headgear. From there, the trail continues for another 3 km on flat rail line route until arriving at

the Winch Camp, which is located at the same elevation as the Headgear. After taking in the

The living of the local villagers depends on their cattle’s and on the medicinal plants that are

collected from the higher mountains legally or illegally. The medicinal value of these plants is
very high and is sold to the pharmacy companies.

Bada Bhangal is a tiny hamlet and has 50 – 60 houses. The people of this village are considered

as Semi-tribal as most of the villagers have two houses. Half of the year people live in the higher

mountains at Bada Bhangal, when temperature goes down and snowfall get heavier, they start

going towards their lower houses at Bir, Thathi, Mared, Sansal, Bada gran and Gundha villages in

lower planes. This journey is a herculean task and due to this some old people stayed at Bada

Bhangal since they can’t walk back to their second home in the lower areas. These senior persons

also take care their cattle during whole winter. This village is so remote and isolated from the

modern epoch that here no telecom signal is available. Whole of the village has one satellite

phone which is operational from 6 pm onwards for 2-3 hrs. only and people have to stand in for

their turn. The device is battery operated, charged by solar panels and can be used until the

battery exhausted. At present, the village hasn’t receiving the electricity supply due to the damage

in the Dam occurred two years back. Now people say that reconstruction work of the Dam has

been carried out and the electricity supply would soon be resumed.

The people of this village continuously strive with the nature and their destiny to live and survive.

Even though their life is hard, they heartily accept all the challenges approach towards them.

Owing to the arduous physicality involved in their daily chores, they always remain fit and

focused. Their life is simple, peaceful and contented with the strong sense of self- determination

and zest. They are great people who have the delights to live in the very close proximity of

Mother Nature.

p. Prashar Lake

the lake. Located at an altitude of 2780 mts above sea level, Prashar Lake is located 105 km from

Bir Billing takes about 3-4 hrs to reach.

Prashar lake is famous for its picturesque landscape and the amazing views all around with snow

covered peaks and Beas River. However, its unique feature is a round shaped floating grass island

which shifts its position regularly. According to the local priest, the depth of the lake remains

unmeasured.

The three storied temple is in traditional Pagoda style, built in the 13th thirteen century from the

wood of a single Deodar tree. The priest here belong to the Rajput clan. The story goes that once

the King was unhappy with the Brahmin priest’s irregularities and replaced him with a Rajput.

As per the local priest, the lake was created by the Pandavas when they were travelling after the
battle of Mahabharata with Kamrunag to find a place to stay. Kamrunag loved the isolation of the

place and decided to stay here for rest of his life. On this request, Bheem pushed the mountain

with his elbow to form a lake, as also the reason for its oval shape. Kamrunag is thus the local

deity of the Kamru valley. Pilgrims throw silver, gold and metal coins in the lake to fulfil their

wishes. Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims travels to Prashar Lake regularly throughout the year.

It is well connected with road and also has regular bus from Mandi starting at 8 am in the

place clean and safe. Prahsar has few shops to eat that serve parantha, Maggi, rajma chawal, cold

drinks, tea etc. Few govt guest houses (PWD and Forest) can be booked from Mandi from their

respective offices but need to be done well in advance. However, Prashar lake is one of the best

option to do from Bir as a day trip and one can also do it on the way while travelling to Manali,

110 km away

Conclusion

We can easily say by analyzing above that Bir Billing is very unique i terms of geography , culture as

well as a great travel destination. It has vast potential to grow and improve as a great travel destination.

With passing time its popularity will grew and so will the new opportunites.

The area is so diverse and there is way too much more to discover that it opens a wide opportunity to
everyone intrested to explore and search new oppotunities here.

The wide range of forest area and picturesque valleys and wide range of floura and fauna makes it a very

impressive place.

In the face of climate and geography, Himachal Pradesh is rich in flora and fauna, majestic and stunning

mountain ranges. India's outdoor adventure playground is Himachal Pradesh. The rush of adventure

lovers will grow rapidly once they go into Himachal Pradesh, the heavenly residence of God. The

government's visions make it an important body for the promotion and growth of tourism through the

Tourism Development Board. The government has notified a Council of Tourism Development which

can cross-cut management of various linkages and which follow the patterns of other Boards worldwide.

These are all signs of clear realization that tourism must become sustainable in the government and

among policymakers. However, the fact that the concept of ecological tourism is supported by the

industry at least is not a necessity, nor is this an indicator of the fact that there are a substantial number of

people already involved, who are not professionals in the hospitality or tourism industry, and who treat

the environment which sustains it.

The conclusion is that Himachal Pradesh is blessed with natural landmarks, places of worship and other

tourist attractions and the opportunity is huge for anyone intrested.
