Flipped Classroom

The flipped classroom is a way of learning which aims to increase

students’ active engagement in their academics by inverting, or “flipping” the
classroom in two aspects:

Firstly, learning activities which are traditionally done at home and at

school are switched with one another. Students carry out ahead research,
material reading, as well as listening to online lectures, studying the topics by
themselves before class; while doing exercises, discussing and clarifying the
remaining missing points with teachers during school. Therefore, the flipped
classroom method redefines in-class and after/before-class work.

More significantly, the role of the teacher and the student are reversed.
While in a traditional classroom the teacher is the leader of a lesson, the focus
of attention, and the primary provider of information; in a “flipped classroom”,
teachers play more of a guiding role, directing group conversations as well as
student’s own research and learning rather than “spoon-feeding” them
information. The same can be said of the student’s role: instead of passively
receiving knowledge the traditional way, they have to actively engage in
discussions, analyze the reading material, doing exercises, and be more self-
conscious in seeking out information and knowledge. Consequently, the
classroom becomes an active and energetic learning environment.
