JUNIORS V
Fourth Test 2014 Total: 80 marks
KEY
 Listening
Please follow these steps before playing the recording:
1. Go through the instructions with the students.
2. Allow them time to read the statements before they listen. Make sure they understand what they have to do
before starting the activity.
3. Play the recording or read the script twice.

Script:
Nick: So, Jess, you travel a lot, don’t you? What do you do with your dog when you travel? I’m planning
to go to Europe next year and I don’t know what to do with Pebbles.
Jess: Well, you know Hannah and I are like mother and daughter so it’s very difficult for me to leave her.
It all depends on where I’m travelling to and for how long. As a rule, if I’m travelling for work and it’s just a
few days, I don’t take her because I usually stay at hotels with my colleagues and not everybody likes
dogs.
Nick: And what do you do with her?
Jess: I have very good friends who love to look after her and they always offer to do so when they know I
have to travel.
Nick: That’s great…and what about when you go on holidays? Do you take her with you?
Jess: Actually, yes. Well, when I travel around here, in England, she travels with me almost everywhere I
go. She sits in the car, she has her own seat, and she enjoys the ride a lot. This is why I usually rent a
house in the countryside, so that she can stay with me and have a lot of space to run. Apart from that,
there aren’t many pet-friendly hotels here in England.
Nick: Oh, wow, that's cool and have you ever taken her on long trips? I mean, when travelling by plane,
for example?
Jess: Yes! Two years ago I had to move to the USA to work there for six months and of course I took her
with me. I was a bit scared at first because I didn’t know how she was going to react during the flight. The
vet had recommended giving her some sleeping pills but it wasn’t necessary. She seemed to be really
relaxed when we got to the airport and when we arrived in the USA, she was sleeping like an angel,
which tells me that she enjoyed the flight as well.
Nick: Wow. So you took Hannah to the States?
Jess: Yes, she’s travelled a lot, just like me! When I had some time off, I took my car and travelled as
much as I could. I remember we went to the Great Canyon once and she loved it. She sat next to me
really quietly and we admired the beauty of the place together.
Nick: So, it’s as if she was another person! Cool!
Jess: Yes. She’s really accustomed to travelling and as long as she is with me, everything is fine
because she knows she’s with her mum! In fact, my friends once decided to take her for a ride one day
and she really hated it. She never stopped barking and she even ate the car seats! She was really
naughty!

General impression mark scheme

Bracket 5 (20-18): Full and competent completion of task with a good command of structures and
appropriate vocabulary. Very few errors if any. Well organised and clear.

Bracket 4 (17-15): Task completed adequately, with reasonable command of structures. Few errors,
none of which obscure meaning. Adequate vocabulary though occasionally repetitive and slightly limited.

Bracket 3 (14-12) Pass mark: More errors, none of which obscure meaning. Clear even if simple.
Include here answers which are reasonably correct, but which provide minimal information on which to
make a judgement.

Bracket 2 (11-9): Not quite clear enough. Errors begin to interfere significantly with understanding. Not
really addressed to the task.

Bracket 1 (8-1): Errors and general organisation make it very difficult to understand what the writer wants
to say.
