LEARNER’S GUIDE

CALA COMPONENT E

LEARNING AREA : COMBINED SCIENCE

TOPIC : HEAT TRANSFER

CALA TYPE : PRACTICAL

DURATION : TWO WEEKS

BACKGROUND

Knowledge of heat transfer methods in manufacturing goods like clothing, solar water heaters,
cooking utensils and in construction of structures is important and the country needs more
engineers in that field. In this CALA you will set up and carryout a practical experiment on heat
transfer, record temperature readings and make a conclusion of results.

How you will be assessed

You will be assessed on your ability to:

1. Measure temperature

2. Accurately read scale readings

3. Compare heat loss from different surfaces

4. Make conclusions from experiment results

Part A

Get two tin cans of equal size, one that is polished and shiny on the outside and another that is black
and dull. Each tin can must have a lid. Put a thermometer in each of the tin cans and pour equal
amounts of hot water in each tin can. Place the tin cans inside a room and let them cool.

1 a. Stir the water and record the temperature in table 1. at the start of the experiment and at two
minute intervals.

b. Plot a graph of temperature against time in a graph paper for the black tin and for the shiny tin
and attach your graph. (4)

PART B

2. a. Use the same tin cans used in part A, this time pour equal amounts of tap water and place the
tin cans in full sunlight. Stir and take temperature readings at the start and after 20 minutes table 2.

heat by different surfaces
