Equivalent Fractions Baking Activity
Grade(s): Grade 6
Subject(s): Math
GOALS
Curricular Expectations: Learning Outcome: “Students add and subtract fractions with denominators within 100.”
Knowledge:
● Denominators are related if one is a multiple of the other.
● Multiplication of one denominator by the factor that relates it to another denominator
achieves common denominators.
● The product of the denominators of two fractions provides a common denominator.
Understanding:
● Any numbers with the same unit can be compared, added, or subtracted.

TIMING, SEQUENCING, TRANSITIONS OF LESSON
INCL. KEY PROMPTS & INSTRUCTIONS
Introduction ● “To wrap-up what we have been learning about fractions (adding, equivalent fractions,
2 minutes comparing fractions) we are going to celebrate with a baking activity.”
Instructions ● Using the Google Slides, explain that a baker who loved math accidentally wrote the
8-10 minutes recipe wrong using equivalent fractions that are not equal to proper measuring cups.
○ You will be put into assigned groups and it is your job to change the fractions
to proper measuring cup amounts.
○ You are required to show your work for every question and each person will
take turns scribing per question.
○ (Group 1 and 2 will get the single portion recipe and have to double it. Group
3, 4, and 5 will get the already doubled recipe and only need to convert the
amounts to measuring cups.)
● Go through a demonstration on the worksheet under the projector.
● When this worksheet is complete, you will trade in your old recipe for a new recipe and
transfer your new values over.
● Here is the catch… if your group miscalculates something, your cookies may end up
not tasting so good. Slow down, double or triple check your work. I will not be telling
groups if they have miscalculated or not.
● Once you are happy with your new recipe, figure out which group member will
perform which ingredient or step of the recipe. Evenly divide these among the members
of your group.
● This activity will also be a baking competition. Groups will compete against each other
and try to produce the best cookie… We will even have a special guest joining us for a
blind taste test.
Math Work Time ● Rotate between groups to provide support where needed for the math portion.
25 minutes ● Have group 3 at the back table with me.
