What is Stroke?
- Sometimes called a brain attack,
occurs when something blocks blood
supply to part of the brain or when a
blood vessel in the brain bursts. In
either case, parts of the brain
become damaged or die.
Based on the duration and evolution of
- Can cause lasting brain damage, symptoms:
long-term disability or even death.
• Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)-
Symptoms resolve in 24 hrs.

2 Types of Stroke • Stroke – symptoms last for more

than 24 hrs.
 Ischemic Stroke
• Progressing Stroke – focal
 A stroke that occurs because blood neurological deficit worsens after
flow to the brain is blocked. The the pt. first presents.
brain cannot get oxygen and
nutrients from the blood. Without • Complete Stroke- focal deficit
oxygen and nutrients, brain cells persists, but is not progressing
begin to die within a minute.
 Hemorrhagic Stroke
- A stroke that occurs because of sudden
bleeding in the brain. The leaked blood
results in pressure on brain cells,
damaging them.
Sub-type of hemorrhagic stroke:

 Intracerebral hemorrhagic
stroke
• Visual Disturbances
• Dizziness and Loss of Balance
• Severe Headache
Risk factors • Facial Drooping
 Non-Modifiable
