Directions: Answer the following. Write your answer to the answer sheet provided on the
answer sheet provided below.

1. Admission Charge for Movies (5 points)

The average early-bird special admission price for a movie is $5.81. If the distribution of
movie admission charges is approximately normal with a standard deviation of $0.81, what
is the probability that a randomly selected admission charge is less than $3.50?
(x−μ)
z-score is: z=
σ
($ 3.50−$ 5.81) −77
z= = or -2.85 P(Z< -2.85)= 0.0022
$ 0.81 27
Therefore, the probability that a randomly selected admission charge is less than $3.50 is
0.0022 or 0.22%.
2. SAT Scores (5 points)
The national average SAT score (for Verbal and Math) is 1028. If we assume a normal
distribution with o=92, what is the probability that a randomly selected score exceeds
1200? Source: New York Times Almanac.
The probability that randomly selected score exceeds 1200 is P(X > 1200).
(x−μ)
z-score is: z=
σ
(1200−1028)
z= = 1.8695∨1.87
92
P(Z > 1.87 ) = 1 - P(Z < 1.87)

Using z-score table to find probability z < 1.87.

P(Z < 1.87) = 0.9693 P(Z > 1.87) = 1 - 0.9693

P(Z > 1.87) = 0.0307

Therefore, the probability that a randomly selected score exceeds 1200 is

approximately 0.0307.
3. Teachers' Salaries (15 points)
The average annual salary for all U.S. teachers is $47,750. Assume that the distribution is
normal and the standard deviation is $5680. Find the probability that a randomly selected
teacher earns.
a. Between $35,000 and $45,000 a year
( 3500 0−47750) ( 4 500 0−47750)
P(35000 < X < 45000) = P= <Z<
5680 5680
= P(-2.24 < Z < -0.48) = P(Z < -0.48) -P(Z < -2.24)
= P(Z < 2.24) – P (Z < 0.48)= 0.3031
2.24 = 0.4827 0.48= 0.1844

b. More than $40,000 a year

40 000−47750
P(X > 40000) = P(Z > ) = P (Z -1.36) =
5680
= P(Z < 1.36) = 0.9131

c. If you were applying for a teaching position and were offered $31,000 a year, how would
you feel (based on this information)?
P(X < 31000) = P ¿ = P (Z < -2.95)=
= 1- P(Z < 2.95) = 0.0016
This probability is rare ,that’s why i feel very bad.
