Early Polygraph Instrument

Title of Activity
Theory :
A Polygraph is a duplicating device that produces a copy of a piece of writing simultaneously with the creation of the
original, using pens and ink. Patented by John Isaac Hawkins on May 17, 1803, it was most famously used by the third U.S.
president, Thomas Jefferson, who acquired his first polygraph in 1804 and later suggested improvements to Charles Willson
Peale, owner of the American rights.[1] Because Jefferson was a prolific letter writer, the preservation of his copies have offered
historians extensive insights into Jefferson's viewpoints and actions.[2] Jefferson called the polygraph "the finest invention of the
present age".[3][4] A description of Jefferson's office routine in his own words may be read online. [ Another American, Benjamin
Henry Latrobe was the first customer of Peale's and not only introduced the device to Jefferson but was also instrumental in its
improvement. Mechanisms of this type are more generally known as pantographs, which include simple devices for making
copies at various enlargements or reductions by tracing over a drawing.

Polygraph Test Question Formulation Technique Title

of Activity
Theory :
A polygraph, popularly referred to as a lie detector test, is a device or procedure that measures and records several physiological
indicators such as blood pressure, pulse, respiration, and skin conductivity while a person is asked and answers a series of questions.[1] The belief
underpinning the use of the polygraph is that deceptive answers will produce physiological responses that can be differentiated from those associated with
non-deceptive answers. There are, however, no specific physiological reactions associated with lying, making it difficult to identify factors that separate liars
from truth tellers. Polygraph examiners also prefer to use their own individual scoring method, as opposed to computerized techniques, as they may more
easily defend their own evaluations. The control question test, also known as the probable lie test, was developed to overcome or mitigate the problems with
the relevant- irrelevant testing method. Although the relevant questions in the probable lie test are used to obtain a reaction from liars, the
physiological reactions that "distinguish" liars may also occur in innocent individuals who fear a false detection or feel passionately that they did not commit
the crime. Therefore, although a physiological reaction may be occurring, the reasoning behind the response may be different. Further examination of the
probable lie test has indicated that it is biased against innocent subjects. Those who are unable to think of a lie related to the relevant question will
automatically fail the test.[2]
Purpose : To be able to apply techniques formulating questions during polygraph examination

Task 1. (N)Stands for normal or Irrelevant question – A question which has no connection to the issue , but tha facts are true and
agreed to by the subject
Example ; Today is September 4, 2020?

Task 2 (SR) Sacrifice relevant ) It is called the sacrifice relevant for they have something to do with the case .They are
asked but their result are not evaluated as to bring truthful or deceitful .It reduces the excitement level of the subject
Examples ; Regarding the stealing of money , are you going to answer all the question truthfully ?

Materials / Equipment : Visual samples old polygraph instrument to present Lop Top / Cellphone lens

the response may be different. Further examination of the probable lie test has indicated that it is biased against innocent subjects. Those who are
unable to think of a lie related to the relevant question will automatically fail the test.[2]

A polygraph, popularly referred to as a lie detector test, is a device or procedure that measures and records several
physiological indicators such as blood pressure, pulse, respiration, and skin conductivity while a person is asked and answers a series of questions.[1]
The belief underpinning the use of the polygraph is that deceptive answers will produce physiological responses that can be differentiated from those
associated with non-deceptive answers. There are, however, no specific physiological reactions associated with lying, making it difficult to identify
factors that separate liars from truth tellers. Polygraph examiners also prefer to use their own individual scoring method, as opposed to computerized
techniques, as they may more easily defend their own evaluations. The control question test, also known as the probable lie test, was developed to
overcome or mitigate the problems with the relevant- irrelevant testing method. Although the relevant questions in the probable lie test are
used to obtain a reaction from liars, the physiological reactions that "distinguish" liars may also occur in innocent individuals who fear a false
detection or feel passionately that they did not commit the crime. Therefore, although a physiological reaction may be occurring, the reasoning behind
the response may be different. Further examination of the probable lie test has indicated that it is biased against innocent subjects. Those who are
unable to think of a lie related to the relevant question will automatically fail the test.[2]

POLYGRAPH SCREENING FOR POLICE APPLICANT

When applying for law enforcement jobs, a polygraph test may be required. This will depend upon the agency you are applying with and the job
that you are applying for. Not all jobs and not all agencies require a polygraph test as part of the hiring process. If a polygraph will be required,
often that will be listed on the job announcement. Jobs with Law Enforcement Agency that require a top secret security clearance usually
require a polygraph test as a part of the hiring process. Many state and local law enforcement positions also require a polygraph test. Applicants
who elect not to participate in a required polygraph test will be removed from consideration as this was a part of the police officer requirements.
The purpose of the police polygraph questions is to verify the information that you have already provided. Another purpose is to find out
information about you that you have not provided and may be concealing. One of the key factors the hiring agency wants to determine is if you are an
honest person with integrity. In the academy you will learn about the law, physical tactics, offensive driving, as well as how to shoot a firearm.
One of the things that an agency cannot teach new recruits is honesty and integrity. These are vital traits for anyone working in police department
jobs. However, they must be traits which are already ingrained in anyone they hire and that is why agencies go to great lengths in determining
which applicants have these attributes. For all types of law enforcement, the agency is also trying to determine if the applicant can be trusted. When a
law enforcement officer testifies in court about a case, or to a judge to obtain a warrant, there cannot be any doubt about the accuracy of the
information being provided by the officer.

Purpose : To be able to apply and combine the techniques formulating questions during polygraph examination

Performance Task : Formulate Questions basing in Nine (9) the given scenarios , It is the questions answerable
of Yes or No or Follow the set example

Background Information (5 Questions )

Example ;Have you listed your correct name on your application?

Negative Information from other Agencies (5 Questions )

Agencies want to find out if you applied to any other law enforcement agencies where you were rejected because of a background investigation,
polygraph, psychological assessment, or anything else which would reflect negatively about you.
Example ;Have you applied with any other law enforcement agencies that you have not listed?

Employment Background (5 Questions )

Have you applied with any other law enforcement agencies that you have not listed?
The agency wants to find out if you are going to be a good employee if you are hired. Your past employment history is a good indicator of how you
will perform with that agency. Are you dependable, responsible, hard working. It is unlikely that you are going to change your work ethic with
this new job, so finding about your past employment experience is important.
Example ;Have you intentionally left out any part of your employment history?
Financial Information (5 Questions )
Someone who has a demonstrated history of making poor financial decisions may not be a good hire for an agency.
Example ; Have you failed to list any current debts in your application?
Criminal Behavior (5 Questions )
People who have been engaged in certain criminal behavior may not be appropriate to be working in a law enforcement agency. Also, the agency
wants to find out about all of your past criminal behavior, not just that for which you were caught.
Example; Have you ever been arrested for anything that you have not listed?
Illegal Drug Use (5 Questions )
Depending upon the policy of the department, they may focus on a specific period of time for certain drug use such as within the past three years have
you used marijuana, and if so how many times and when. They will also want to know about other types of drug use.
Example List all illegal drugs that you have used and the date of use.
Alcohol Use (3 Questions )
Example; How often do you use alcohol and how much do you drink when you use alcohol?
Illegal or Deviant Sexual Behavior ( 3 Questions )
Agencies want to determine if you currently are or have been engage in any illegal or deviant sexual behavior.
Example; How many times per week do you watch pornography on the internet?
Closing Questions ( 3 Question)
Example; Have you answered all questions during the process, truthfully?

Materials / Equipment : Sample of Illustrated scenario Lop Top / Cellphone lens

Procedure :

1. Read the above theory carefully for you to be guided and assuming that you are about to conduct Polygraph screening to the Police
applicant you are task to formulate question based on the given scenarios.
2. Construct questions based on the given scenario and the set example which is answerable of yes or no or follow the set example
3. Follow the set guidelines above
4. Formulate your conclusions based on your activity
