4.3. | DIRECTION SENSE TEST | Adirection is a measure of where one thing is in relation to another point or a particular point. The distance between two points is the shortest distance or straight path between them. The shortest route from one point to another may differ from the actual distance travelled. Uae i wath PL el steno g ea aan koa tte) 3 There are four type of major directions, viz. East West North and South. A direction between two major directionsis called sub-major direction. Clearly, there are four sub-major directions. They are NE(North-East), NW (North-West), SE (South-East) and SW (South-West). To determine your sense of direction, youshoulduse the figure below. North North wrth ee 9 West East South South West South East Ais 40 m South-West of B. C is 40 m South-East of B. Then, C is in which direction with respect to A? So, Cisin the East of A. RTEST DISTANCE @ The shortest distance is the eee ofa straight line drawn from the start point to the end point of an object. To find the shortest diagonal distance between two points, we need to know the Pythagorean theorem. Here, AB=Perpendicular BC=Base and AC=Hypotenuse alnitial Position Hence, the shortest distance between Aand C i.e. AC = JAB3BC ec . Final Position A started from his house — towards North. After e i] covering a distance of 8 km. He turned towards left and covered a distance of 6 km. What is the shortest distance now from his house? s Here ABC i isa right- angle triangle, pe Ace Reg AC 64736 =/100 - AC =10 So, now shortest distance between A and his house is 10 km. A Qe Aue es 4. ROTATIONS AND ANGLES This type of direction test requires the person or object to rotate clockwise, anticlockwise, left turn, right turn, etc. to determineits final position. * Angle between two consecutive major directionsis always 90°. * Angle between two consecutive sub-major directionsis always 90°. *Angle between two consecutive major and sub-major directions is always 45°. Clockwise (cw) (ov) ssuopor9-nuy Amanis facing North-West. He turns 90° in the clockwise direction, then 180° in the anticlockwise direction and then another 90° in the same direction. Which direction is he facingnow? As shown in figure the man initially faces in the direction OP. On moving 90° clockwise, he faces in the direction OX. On further moving 180° anticlockwise, he faces in the direction OY. Finally, on moving 90° anticlockwise, he facesin the direction OZ, whichis South-East. @ 4. CONCEPTS OF SHADOW When the sun rises in the east in the morning, people and objects cast shadows in the west. Similarly, when the sun sets in the west in the evening, the shadows of people and objects face east. Sane sunrise ae Nort st West West fast fast a Shadow in East South. Shadow in West One morning after I sunrise, Rohit was — standing facing a pole. The shadow of the pole is > @ exactly to his left. Which oa direction was he facing? i ff ~ ae Pole | Rohit is facing (North) e- | Clearly, Rohit is facing in the North direction. (Shadow) IRECTION PUZZLE This type of direction puzzle involves placing people or items ina line and moving them in different directions. P,Q, Rand Sare playing a game of carrom. P, Rand S, Q are partners. Sis to the right of R who is facing West. Then Q is facing ? s P. R So, Q is facing in the North direction.
