(i) Name two characteristics of simple harmonic motion.
(ii) Under what conditions does the addition of two simple harmonic motions produce a resultant, which is also simple

(iv) A mass at the end of a spring vibrates up and down with a frequency of 0.600 Hz and an amplitude of 5 cm. What is its

spring?

(iii) An oil film spreading over a wet footpath shows colors. Explain how it happens.
(iv) In the white light spectrum obtained with a diffraction grating, the third-order image of a wavelength coincides with the
fourth-order image of a second wavelength. Calculate the ratio of the two wavelengths.
(v) In a double slit experiment the second order maximum occurs at θ= 0.25ᵒ. the wavelength is 650 nm. Determine the slit
separation.
(vi) A soap bubble looks black when it bursts, why?
(vii) What do you mean by selective absorption?
(viii) Describe a wavefront. How do plane wavefronts emerge out of spherical wavefronts?
(ix) What do you understand by linear magnification and angular magnification? Explain how a convex lens is used as a
magnifier.
(x) One can buy a cheap microscope for use by the children. The image seen in such a microscope has colored edges. Why
is this so?
(xi) How the power is lost in optical fiber through dispersion? Explain.
(xii) Find the magnifying power of a convex lens of 25 cm focal length that acts as a magnifying glass.

changes.
(v) A mechanical engineer develops an engine, working between 327ᵒ C and 27ᵒ C, and claims to have an efficiency of
52%. Does he claim correctly? Explain.
(vi) Does the entropy of a system increase or decrease due to friction?
(vii) Why do we not keep bananas in the refrigerator?
(viii) Why spark plug is not needed in diesel engines?
(ix) Define reversible and irreversible processes. Give one example of each.

Q.5: (a) What is a simple pendulum? Show that its motion is S.H.M. Derive expression for its time period. And find
its frequency.

(b) Find the amplitude, frequency, and period of an object vibrating at the end of spring, if the equation for its

position, as a function of time, is x= 0.25 cos⁡( 8)t what is the displacement of the object after 2.0 s?

Q.6: (a) Discuss the effect of pressure, density, and temperature on the speed of sound. Also, prove that
𝑣𝑡 = ⁡ 𝑣𝑜 + 0.61𝑡.

(b) The wavelength of the signals from a radio transmitter is 1500 m and the frequency is 200 kHz. What is the
wavelength for a transmitter operating at 1000 kHz and with what speed do the radio waves travel?

Q.7: (a) Explain the Young’s double slit Experiment by drawing its diagram. How are determine fringe spacing by
this method?

(b) A second-order spectrum is formed at an angle of 38.0ᵒ when light falls normally on a diffraction grating having
5400 lines per centimeter. Determine the wavelength of the light used.

Q.8: (a) Describe Michelson’s experiment for calculating the speed of light.

(b) A compound microscope has lenses of focal lengths of 1.0 cm and 3.0 cm. An object is placed 1.2 cm from the
object lens. If a virtual image is formed, 25 cm from the eye, calculate the separation of the lenses and the
magnification of the instrument.

Q.9: (a) Differentiate “Molar specific heat at constant pressure (𝐶𝑃 )" and “ Molar specific heat at constant volume
(𝐶𝑉 )". Justify that 𝐶𝑃 > ⁡ 𝐶𝑉 . Also prove that 𝐶𝑃 − ⁡ 𝐶𝑉 = 𝑅.

(b) A heat engine performs 100 J of work and at the same time rejects 400 J of heat energy to the cold reservoirs.
What is the efficiency of the engine?
