Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Before You Begin

This manual assists a process engineer in the set-up and use of the TK410K01 Advant Service
Modem Kit. The Advant Service Modem Kit can be used to connect a:
• Advant Station 500 to a modem
• Advant T-Box to a modem
• Advant Controller 410 /460 (AC 410, AC 460) to a modem
• MOD B Controller Subsystem to a modem
• SC Controller Subsystem to a modem
• Multibus node to a modem
• Advant Controller 410/460 to an Advant Station 500 OS,ES
• VT220 or PC terminal to modem or multibus nodes
The TK410K01 Advant Service Modem Kit is used for connecting an Advant OCS node to a
telephone line for remote troubleshooting by the ABB MOD Systems Technical Services
Department. It also contains cables used to connect a terminal to a node for local
troubleshooting.
You must contact the Support Line before connecting the modem to a system for remote
troubleshooting.
• USA at 1-800-HELP365
• World-Wide at 1-614-224-5888
The Support Line must be used to report all problems.
This book is not intended to be the sole source of instruction for use of the Advant Service
Modem Kit. Those people involved in system engineering should attend the applicable system

The modem is HAYES compatible (see Section A.1, Modem Information for specifications) and
is used for connecting an Advant OCS node to a telephone line for remote troubleshooting by
the ABB Technical Services Department.
The telephone line must be an analog type (a digital intraplant telephone system will not work).
For convenience of operation and troubleshooting, the modem should be located close to the
telephone outlet and the node or device it is connected to.
A telephone cable connects the modem to the telephone system. For reliable operation, consider
the following:
• Do not use a line with “call waiting” capability because the tone generated by a telephone
company or PBX (Private Branch Exchange) causes a loss of modem carrier which will
terminate a call.
• Using a telephone extension connected through a switchboard or PBX can cause the
following problems:
– Remote systems cannot autodial your system because they would need to speak to a
human operator.
– Some digital PBXs cannot handle modem signals sent at 1200 baud and higher rates.
This restricts data rates to 300 baud or results in excessive retries.
– Outgoing calls from your system have a high probability of failing because outside
lines accessed through the PBX might be busy.
• A dedicated, direct line that is serviced by a PBX is recommended. This eliminates any
limitations on signal handling that might be imposed by the PBX system.
The modem can be connected to a serial port of any Advant Station 500 Engineering Station,
Operator Station or Information Management Station. You must be able to log-on as a superuser
(root) and be familiar with the operation of the UNIX SAM utility.

Advant® Service Modem Kit Instruction Manual
Section 1.2 Equipment Requirements

The service modem kit can be connected to an Advant T-Box port, an AC 410 - PM150 CPU
service port, an AC 460 - PM510 CPU service port, MOD B Controller subsystem or SC
Controller subsystem.
An Advant 410/460 can also be connected directly to an Advant Station OS or ES directly
without the modem.
A VT220 System Maintenance Terminal or PC can be used with the modem to configure its
parameters before connecting to an Advant DCN T-Box, an AC 410 PM150 CPU service port,
an AC 460 PM510 CPU service port, MOD B Controller subsystem or SC Controller
subsystem.

CAUTION
Before installation of this kit, make sure proper precautions are taken to prevent
disturbance or upset of the process under control.

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can result from the buildup of static electricity on
or around the components you handle. You can even carry a charge on your body,
and the discharge of this energy through a component or your computer can cause
damage to the system. Observe the following precaution during the installation
and removal tasks to prevent damage to the devices from ESD:

• Wear a grounded static strap on your wrist to ensure that any accumulated
electrostatic charge will be discharged from your body to ground.

WARNING
Leaving the modem connected to a system and powered-up could be a serious
violation of security.

1.3.1 Conventions
The following conventions are used throughout this manual for the presentation of material:
• The words in proper names of screen elements (for example, the title in the title bar of a
window, the label for a field of a dialog box) are initially capitalized.
• The names of keyboard keys are boldfaced.
– Initial capital letters are used for the name of a keyboard key if it is labeled on the
keyboard. For example, the Return key or <Return>.
– Lowercase letters are used for the name of a keyboard key that is not labeled on the
keyboard. For example, the space bar, comma key, and so on.
– In descriptions, the word “key” is used in conjunction with its name. For example,
pressing the Return key initiates the process.
– In tables and procedures, angle brackets replace the word “key.” For example, press
<Return>.
– A dash is used to indicate that you must simultaneously press several keys. For
example, <Ctrl-C> indicates that you must hold down the Control key while
pressing the C key.

Section 3.1 Considerations

Chapter 3 Configuration

3.1 Considerations
This chapter will describe the set-up steps needed before using the Advant Service Kit for
remote access. These will involve:
• Configuring an Advant Station 500 serial port for use with a modem.
• Configuring an Advant Station 500 serial port for use with a AC 410 or AC 460.
• Configuring the modem when used with other equipment.

3.2 Setting Up an Advant Station for Communications to a Modem

3.2.1 Check the Cable

See Section 2.1.2, Connecting a Modem to an Advant Station 500 to select the interface and
cable you will use for your particular station.

3.2.2 Configure the Serial Port

Configure the station to recognize the modem using the on-line tool called SAM (System
Administration Manager). The port you plugged the modem into is the port you will need to
configure in the Advant Station.
Procedures for stations running UNIX 9 or UNIX 10 operating systems are provided in the
following sections.

3.2.2.1 UNIX 9 Procedure to Configure the Serial Port

1. Start an HP-TERM window.
2. Log into the station as a superuser (root).
3. Enter sam <Return>.
4. In the SAM main window, highlight the Peripheral Devices-> list item and activate the
Open control button. (The Peripheral Devices window appears, displaying a list of types
of peripheral devices.)
5. In the Peripheral Devices window, highlight the Terminals and Modems list item and
activate the Open control button. (The Terminals and Modems window appears,
displaying a list of the currently-configured terminals and modems.)
6. To add a modem, pull down the Action menu and choose Add Modem.... (The Add
Modem screen appears.) Enter the appropriate data in each field.

3BUR 001 147D0001 REV A 3-1

Advant® Service Modem Kit Instruction Manual
Chapter 3 Configuration

7. Choose the proper interface card (1 or 2) SBM address and keep the other default settings:
card 1 204 = port 0 (A)(1) speed = 9600
card 2 205 = port 1 (B)(2) speed = 9600

NOTE
Do not change the Port Number field. It should always be 0.

a. Select Use Device for Calling Out.

b. Select Receive In-coming Calls.
c. If you need help with how to complete the screen, activate the Help control button.
To get help on a particular data field, put the location cursor on that field and press the
F1 key.
8. After completing the Add Modem screen, you should be ready for SAM to add the modem
to your system. SAM does this by creating the appropriate device files, and by making a
getty entry in the /etc/inittab file.
9. When you are ready for SAM to add the modem, activate the OK control button.
10. Exit SAM.

Verify that Device Drivers are Loaded and Running

Make sure that you have connected the cable to the station and the modem; and have plugged
the modem in the telephone line.
A program called /etc/getty monitors the serial ports on your system and displays the login
prompt when there is activity detected on the line. You should set up your system to have two
lines - one for dialing out and one for receiving incoming transactions. The getty should only be
set up on ports that will receive incoming calls.
1. To verify that SAM has created the device drivers, enter:
ll /dev/ttyd* /dev/cu* <Return>
2. You should see the following:
/dev/ttyd0x c 1 0x20y000
/dev/cul0x c 1 0x20y001
/dev/cua0x c 1 0x20y001
Where x is the number assigned by SAM as to the device listing and y is the serial port
number (4 is for port A and 5 is for port B).
3. To verify that getty is running on the port and it is in a pending state, enter:
ps -ef|grep getty <Return>
4. You should see the following:
a root 272 1 0 08:23:42 ? 0:00 /usr/lib/uucp/uugety -h ttyd00 9600
There should be a “?” in the tty field to show it is pending. If getty is not in a pending state,
the hardware should be checked.

3-2 3BUR 001 147D0001 REV A

Advant® Service Modem Kit Instruction Manual
Section 3.2.2 Configure the Serial Port

5. If getty is not running (or does not look like the example above), you will have to edit the
“/etc/inittab” file and check for the getty process command in there. The “/etc/inittab” file
should look like one of these:
zz:234:respawn:/etc/getty -h ttyd0x nnnn
or
zz:234:respawn:/usr/lib/uucp/uugety -h ttyd0x nnnn
Where zz is a 2 character entry ID and nnn is the baud rate. For example:
a0:234:respawn:/usr/lib/uucp/getty -h ttyd00 9600.
If your system “/etc/inittab” file looks like this for example:
a0:3:respawn:/usr/lib/uucp/uugetty -r -t 60 ttyd00 9600
the -r -t has to be changed to -h ; the :3: has to be changed to :234: ; but you do not
have to modify the a0: part.
6. To institute the changes on the system enter:
init q<Return>

NOTE
If the getty process is currently running, you will need to enter
kill -9 <PID of getty process><Return> prior to doing an
init q<Return> entry.

Configure the Station for Call out

The station needs to be configured for call-out usage to be able to set the parameters on the
modem.
To configure the station for call-out usage, the file “/usr/lib/uucp/Devices” must have the
following entries:
ACU cul0x cua0x 9600 hayes
Direct cul0x cua0x 9600 direct
ACU ttyd0x cua0x 9600 direct
Where x is the port number.

3.2.2.2 UNIX 10 Procedure to Configure the Serial Port

The serial port must be configured as a direct connect terminal with hardware flow control
enabled. To verify the port is configured correctly, enter:
ls -l /dev/tty0p0 /dev/tty1p0 <Return>
You should see the following:
crw-rw-rw- 1 bin bin 1 0x000010 <date> /dev/tty0p0
crw-rw-rw- 1 bin bin 1 0x010010 <date> /dev/tty1p0

3BUR 001 147D0001 REV A 3-3

Chapter 3 Configuration

If the devices files do not exist or are not configured properly, use the mknod command to
create a modem device file as follows:
mknod /dev/tty0p0 c 1 0x000010 for port 0
or
mknod /dev/tty1p0 c 1 0x010010 for port 1
Configure the station to recognize the modem using the on-line tool called SAM (System
Administration Manager). The port you plugged the modem cable into is the port you will need
to configure in the Station.

3.4.1 Match the Baud Rates of the Device and the Modem Using a Terminal
1. With a 3BUC950038R0001 cable connected to the modem, configure it as follows:
&F Default factory settings
&C1 DCD tracks state of data carrier from remote
&D2 Enable hang up on DTR transition
S0=1 Enable auto answer
S36=14 (S48=7) LAPM or async
&K1 Disable flow control
&W0 Save changes to non-volatile memory

NOTE
In the above command settings, the S37 (baud rate) is not listed because, in the
factory settings, S37 is set to zero. Zero is auto-baud, and the modem
automatically sets itself to the baud rate of the device it is connected to.

2. Enter the commands like this:

AT &F &C1 &D2 S0=1 S36=14 &K1 &W0<Return>
3. For the modem to automatically set the baud rate, the device needs to send it some form of
data. To use the modem with the devices listed in Table 3-1, set S37 command to a specific
baud rate for these devices.

Table 3-1. Device BAUD Rates

Device Baud Setting S37 =

Advant Station AUTO 0 (factory default)
AC 460 19.2K 13
T Box 9600 9
SC Cont. 4800 7
Model B Cont. 4800 7
Turbo Node 9600 9

Enter:
AT S37=x &W0<Return> For x see Table 3-1.
4. The modem can now be powered off, disconnected from the VT220 or PC, and moved to
the device it has been configured for.

Section 4.1 Making a Modem Service Connection

Chapter 4 Remote Access Connection

4.1 Making a Modem Service Connection

Make an initial contact with Technical Support to arrange for a remote access connection. The
service person will need the following:
1. Make sure the modem is ON and that AutoAnswer is enabled.
2. Supply the following information to service personnel:
a. Telephone number that the modem is connected to.
b. Password (root) for the Advant Station 500 that the modem is connected to.
c. Node name(s) and password(s) for stations on the network that may have to be
accessed.
Also, additional information may be needed before calling; such as: system version, AS 500
type, device(s) connected to, OS/ES/IMS version, and etc.

4.2 Additional Information

Have the modem set-up before an emergency occurs. Do not leave the modem connected, but
once the modem is set-up, it can be powered off and it will hold its configuration. It is much
easier to be sure that everything is working before there is a problem. The on-site technician can
call Technical Support at any time and someone will help with the set-up if required. We would
much rather work without the added pressure on an emergency. Once everything is set-up
properly, all that would be required for a remote access connection is to connect a telephone line
to the modem and/or turn on the modem.
It is recommended that the person trying to establish a remote connection be familiar with
Advant technology, PC’s and modems.
Please read and keep the documentation that comes with the modem. Most Hayes compatibles
are the same from a software point of view but may have hardware switches to do set-up or have
other configuration methods.

WARNING
Leaving the modem connected to a station and powered-up could be a serious
violation of security.
