Chapter 1 Introduction
The modem is HAYES compatible (see Section A.1, Modem Information for specifications) and
is used for connecting an Advant OCS node to a telephone line for remote troubleshooting by
the ABB Technical Services Department.
The telephone line must be an analog type (a digital intraplant telephone system will not work).
For convenience of operation and troubleshooting, the modem should be located close to the
telephone outlet and the node or device it is connected to.
A telephone cable connects the modem to the telephone system. For reliable operation, consider
the following:
• Do not use a line with “call waiting” capability because the tone generated by a telephone
company or PBX (Private Branch Exchange) causes a loss of modem carrier which will
terminate a call.
• Using a telephone extension connected through a switchboard or PBX can cause the
following problems:
– Remote systems cannot autodial your system because they would need to speak to a
human operator.
– Some digital PBXs cannot handle modem signals sent at 1200 baud and higher rates.
This restricts data rates to 300 baud or results in excessive retries.
– Outgoing calls from your system have a high probability of failing because outside
lines accessed through the PBX might be busy.
• A dedicated, direct line that is serviced by a PBX is recommended. This eliminates any
limitations on signal handling that might be imposed by the PBX system.
The modem can be connected to a serial port of any Advant Station 500 Engineering Station,
Operator Station or Information Management Station. You must be able to log-on as a superuser
(root) and be familiar with the operation of the UNIX SAM utility.
The service modem kit can be connected to an Advant T-Box port, an AC 410 - PM150 CPU
service port, an AC 460 - PM510 CPU service port, MOD B Controller subsystem or SC
Controller subsystem.
An Advant 410/460 can also be connected directly to an Advant Station OS or ES directly
without the modem.
A VT220 System Maintenance Terminal or PC can be used with the modem to configure its
parameters before connecting to an Advant DCN T-Box, an AC 410 PM150 CPU service port,
an AC 460 PM510 CPU service port, MOD B Controller subsystem or SC Controller
subsystem.
CAUTION
Before installation of this kit, make sure proper precautions are taken to prevent
disturbance or upset of the process under control.
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can result from the buildup of static electricity on
or around the components you handle. You can even carry a charge on your body,
and the discharge of this energy through a component or your computer can cause
damage to the system. Observe the following precaution during the installation
and removal tasks to prevent damage to the devices from ESD:
• Wear a grounded static strap on your wrist to ensure that any accumulated
electrostatic charge will be discharged from your body to ground.
WARNING
Leaving the modem connected to a system and powered-up could be a serious
violation of security.

1.3.1 Conventions
The following conventions are used throughout this manual for the presentation of material:
• The words in proper names of screen elements (for example, the title in the title bar of a
window, the label for a field of a dialog box) are initially capitalized.
• The names of keyboard keys are boldfaced.
– Initial capital letters are used for the name of a keyboard key if it is labeled on the
keyboard. For example, the Return key or <Return>.
– Lowercase letters are used for the name of a keyboard key that is not labeled on the
keyboard. For example, the space bar, comma key, and so on.
– In descriptions, the word “key” is used in conjunction with its name. For example,
pressing the Return key initiates the process.
– In tables and procedures, angle brackets replace the word “key.” For example, press
<Return>.
– A dash is used to indicate that you must simultaneously press several keys. For
example, <Ctrl-C> indicates that you must hold down the Control key while
pressing the C key.
– The phrase “press and release” is used to indicate that you sequentially press several
keys. For example, to close a window, press and release <Alt>, and then <F4>. This
indicates that you press and release the Alt key, and then you press and release the F4
function key.
• The names of push and toggle buttons are boldfaced.
– Initial capital letters are used for the name of a push or toggle button labeled on the
display. For example, the OK button.
– In descriptions, tables and procedures, the word “button” is used in conjunction with
its name. For example, pressing the OK button initiates the process.
• The names of menus and menu items are boldfaced.
– Initial capital letters are used for the name of menus listed in the menu bar. For
example, the File menu.
– Initial capital letters are used for the name of menu items. For example, to open a new
window, choose New from the File menu.
• System prompts/messages are shown in the Courier font, and user responses/input are in
the boldfaced Courier font. For example, if you enter a value out of range, the following
message is displayed:
Entered value is not valid. The value must be 0-30.
In a tutorial, you may be told to enter the string TIC132 in a field. The string is shown as
follows in the procedure:

Chapter 3 Configuration
3.1 Considerations
This chapter will describe the set-up steps needed before using the Advant Service Kit for
remote access. These will involve:
• Configuring an Advant Station 500 serial port for use with a modem.
• Configuring an Advant Station 500 serial port for use with a AC 410 or AC 460.
• Configuring the modem when used with other equipment.
7. Choose the proper interface card (1 or 2) SBM address and keep the other default settings:
card 1 204 = port 0 (A)(1) speed = 9600
card 2 205 = port 1 (B)(2) speed = 9600
NOTE
Do not change the Port Number field. It should always be 0.
5. If getty is not running (or does not look like the example above), you will have to edit the
“/etc/inittab” file and check for the getty process command in there. The “/etc/inittab” file
should look like one of these:
zz:234:respawn:/etc/getty -h ttyd0x nnnn
or
zz:234:respawn:/usr/lib/uucp/uugety -h ttyd0x nnnn
Where zz is a 2 character entry ID and nnn is the baud rate. For example:
a0:234:respawn:/usr/lib/uucp/getty -h ttyd00 9600.
If your system “/etc/inittab” file looks like this for example:
a0:3:respawn:/usr/lib/uucp/uugetty -r -t 60 ttyd00 9600
the -r -t has to be changed to -h ; the :3: has to be changed to :234: ; but you do not
have to modify the a0: part.
6. To institute the changes on the system enter:
init q<Return>
NOTE
If the getty process is currently running, you will need to enter
kill -9 <PID of getty process><Return> prior to doing an
init q<Return> entry.
If the devices files do not exist or are not configured properly, use the mknod command to
create a modem device file as follows:
mknod /dev/tty0p0 c 1 0x000010 for port 0
or
mknod /dev/tty1p0 c 1 0x010010 for port 1
Configure the station to recognize the modem using the on-line tool called SAM (System
Administration Manager). The port you plugged the modem cable into is the port you will need
to configure in the Station.
NOTE
Do not change the Port Number field. It should always be 0.
NOTE
The ABB keyboard does not have a tilde key, therefore you must use a standard
“QWERTY” keyboard to exit.
NOTE
The ABB keyboard does not have a tilde key, therefore you must use a standard
“QWERTY” keyboard to exit.
3.4.1 Match the Baud Rates of the Device and the Modem Using a Terminal
1. With a 3BUC950038R0001 cable connected to the modem, configure it as follows:
&F Default factory settings
&C1 DCD tracks state of data carrier from remote
&D2 Enable hang up on DTR transition
S0=1 Enable auto answer
S36=14 (S48=7) LAPM or async
&K1 Disable flow control
&W0 Save changes to non-volatile memory
NOTE
In the above command settings, the S37 (baud rate) is not listed because, in the
factory settings, S37 is set to zero. Zero is auto-baud, and the modem
automatically sets itself to the baud rate of the device it is connected to.
Enter:
AT S37=x &W0<Return> For x see Table 3-1.
4. The modem can now be powered off, disconnected from the VT220 or PC, and moved to
the device it has been configured for.
The settings that are required to work with the Advant Station are:
