Cardinals Trey McBride meets Gilbert family after tossing son

game used towel

Written by: Alexandra Medina

GILBERT, Ariz.-- It is not often that sports fans have the opportunity of going out to eat with a

professional athlete. One Valley family was able to do just that. Lots of NFL fans look forward to

the preseason, because of their opportunity to score some memorabilia. During an Arizona

Cardinals 2023 NFL preseason game one lucky family was able to walk away with a lot more

than just some memorabilia.

Trey Mcbride, an Arizona Cardinals tight end, handed over his game-used towel to eleven-year-

old Abner Wong, but what the family didn't know is that days later they would be meeting up

with McBride, and eating lunch together in Downtown Chandler.

It took just one sentence to spark a friendship between McBride, and the Gilbert family. Wong

noticed the Cardinals were in a little bit of trouble heading into halftime, but he had some

encouraging words for McBride while he was heading into the locker room “You got this,

Cardinals!” Wong said.

McBride tossed him his towel, and days later Jessica Wong turned to a local Facebook group

called ‘Go Gilbert’ in hopes that her local community would connect the Wong family with

McBride. Wong thought it would be cool to get McBride to sign the towel.. Little did she know

that this would be the beginning of a new friendship.

‘He’s a really kind guy everytime we see him he asks how the kids are doing and tells us to say

hello to them… it's been a blast.` Wong said.

It’s memories like this that will last forever, and as McBride continues to impact the community

“You got this Cardinals!” continues to be said.
