Multiple Choice Questions 1–10

An aeroplane is flying horizontally over level ground. It has an altitude of 490 m and velocity
of 100 m s–1. As the aeroplane passes directly above a cross marked on the ground, an object
is released from the aeroplane.
How far away from the cross will this object land?
(A) 490 m
(B) 1000 m
(C) 10,000 m
(D) 49,000 m

A cricket ball is hit from ground level at 25.0 m s–1 at an angle of elevation of 40.0°. What is
the magnitude of its horizontal velocity component?
(A) 16.1 m s-1
(B) 19.2 m s-1
(C) 21.0 m s-1
(D) 25.0 m s-1

A 70 kg astronaut in the International Space Station (ISS) feels ”weightless”. This is because:
(A) They are accelerating at the same rate as the ISS, so their true weight is zero.
(B) They are accelerating at the same rate as the ISS, so their apparent weight is zero.
(C) They are accelerating at the same rate as the ISS, so their apparent mass is zero.
(D) The Earth’s gravitational field is zero at this point.

The initial velocity required by a space probe to just escape the gravitational pull of a planet is
called the escape velocity.
Which of the following quantities does NOT affect the magnitude of the escape velocity?
(A) the mass of the planet
(B) the radius of the planet
(C) the mass of the space probe
(D) the gravitational constant, G
A device launches two identical balls (x and y) simultaneously in a horizontal direction from
the same height. The results are shown.

Which statement correctly describes what happens?

(A) x hits the ground before y as it is closer to the launch site.
(B) y hits the ground before x as it has a higher launch velocity.
(C) x and y hit the ground simultaneously with the same velocity.
(D) x and y hit the ground simultaneously with different velocities.

The Earth, assumed spherical, rotates once on its axis every 24 hours. The angular velocity of
the Earth is closest to:
(A) 3.1 x 10-5 rad s-1
(B) 3.6 x 10-5 rad s-1
(C) 6.3 x 10-5 rad s-1
(D) 7.3 x 10-5 rad s-1

A stroboscopic photograph was taken of part of the motion of a puck, of negligible thickness,
moving with uniform circular motion at the end of a string, as shown in the diagram below.

If the frequency of the strobe light is 10 Hz, the puck has a mass of 0·20 kg, and the length of
the line was 0·25 m, the tension in the string is closest to:
(A) 0.7 N
(B) 1.0 N
(C) 1.4 N
(D) 2.0 N
A ball was thrown upward at an angle of 45°. It landed at the same height as it was thrown.
Which graph best represents the kinetic energy of the ball during its time of flight?

A space probe, P, is in a stable orbit around a small, distant planet. The probe fires a forward-
facing rocket that reduces its orbital speed by half.
Which of the following best illustrates the subsequent motion of the probe?
An old bicycle design is the penny farthing, which has a very large front wheel to which the
pedals are directly attached.

The large front wheel has a radius of 66 cm and the pedals extend 15 cm from the axle.
If a 70 kg rider stands directly on one of the pedals, what is the maximum torque applied to
the pedal?
(A) 1.03 Nm
(B) 103 Nm
(C) 453 Nm
(D) 480 Nm

Question 11 (6 marks)

A hot-air balloon is travelling at a constant velocity of 20 m s-1 at an angle of 30° to the horizontal,
as shown in the diagram below.

At the exact moment the balloon passes over point A, located on the ground 80 m below, the
operator of the balloon drops a steel ball.

(a) Calculate the time it takes for the steel ball to hit the ground. Ignore air resistance, and
assume the ground is perfectly flat. 4

(b) How far away from point A does the ball hit the ground? 2
