A. For each of the following indicate whether the variable is quantitative or qualitative. If it is
quantitative, tell whether it discrete or continuous. Finally, state the level of measurement of each
of the given variable.
a. Weight of women (in cm) before they took the diet.

B. Determine whether the given value is a statistic or a parameter.


1. A sample of students selected, and the average age (years) is 20.7 years.
2. After checking computer records for every commercial movie made last year, the longest running time
is found to be 187 minutes.
3. All of the state governors are surveyed, and 30 of them found to be on the anti-admin group.
4. Sugar packs are randomly selected and the average content per pack is 3.647 grams.
5. 78% of the banks that were sampled are savings banks.

C. Classify the following statements as belonging to the area of descriptive statistics or statistical
inference.
1. As a result of recent cutbacks by the oil-producing nations, we can expect the price of gasoline to
double in the next year.
2. At least 5% of all fires reported last year in a certain city were deliberately set by arsonists.
3. Of all patients who have received this particular type of drug at a local clinic, 60% later developed
significant side effects.
4. Assuming that less than 20% of the coffee beans were destroyed by the last typhoon Yolanda, we
would expect an increase of no more than 30 cents for a kilogram of coffee by the end of the year.
5. As a result of a recent poll, most Filipinos are in favor of building additional nuclear power plants.

D. The average cost for student textbooks last semester was determined to be P285.00, based on an
enrolment of 2000 students. As a class project, a Statistics class polled 250 students and determined
the average cost of student textbooks to be P286.50.
