1 Safety precautions

Aquila system described in the following manual can be either directly or indirectly

connected to equipment under voltage. It is mandatory paying attention to the whole lot of

necessary warnings and precautions during installation phase.

TERMS AND SYMBOLS

CAUTION! statement identify conditions or practices that could result in damage to the

equipment or other property.

WARNING! statement identify conditions or practices that could result in injury or loss of

life.

This symbol, wherever it appears on the test system, alerts you in presence of
non-insulated dangerous voltages – these voltages may be sufficient to cause
electrical shock

This symbol, wherever it appears on the test system, alerts you of important
operating and maintenance instructions in the accompanying literature. Read the
manual.

WARNING! In order to avoid the insurgence of dangerous conditions regarding

persons or things during installation, operation and maintenance of Techimp HQ
srl equipment, it is required to read carefully the whole manual before performing
any operation with the system.

WARNING! The operators should observe carefully the safety precautions listed
below. Failure in observing the precautions may result in serious injuries or
death

Only trained and qualified personnel is allowed to do any operation in high voltage areas.

Only personnel experienced in high voltage apparatuses and testing systems is allowed

to install and test the Techimp Aquila system.

Service personnel should be instructed to observe all safety precautions as stated in the

operating instructions and the high voltage standard safety precautions. Failure to do so

could result in serious injury.

To avoid the risk of shock and personal injury, disconnect every device from the AC mains

and uninterruptible power sources (UPS) before doing any maintenance and cleaning

operation.

Techimp Aquila
User’s Manual

Do not handle, install, or remove any component while the system is operating. Ensure

that the high voltage on the equipment under test is off before doing it. Failure to observe

these precautions can result in potential electric shock to personnel, arcing, damage to

the connectors and, finally, to the system.

Each Techimp Aquila needs a good direct earth connection, provided using the

appropriate ground termination located on each detection unit.

The output signal from sensors connected to the Techimp Aquila and the power

frequency reference signal used for synchronization must be suitable for the input plugs

specifications (allowable signal ranges). Each signal must also be connected with the

appropriate terminations on each detection unit. Failure in following the specifications can

cause damages to the acquisition unit.

Maximum operating temperature is limited to 60° C and 45° C in charging battery mode;

the direct and continuous exposure to the sun light may cause the operating temperature

to rise. If the real operating temperature can be higher than stated limits, a cooling system

must be provided.

2 Introduction

PRELIMINARY ACTIONS

Carefully inspect package looking for exterior evidence of rough handling in transit. If none,

proceed to unpack carefully. After removing the components from its package, inspect it

thoroughly for damage.

Fig. 2.1: The Aquila suitcase and it content

IMPORTANT! In case of external damages due to rough handling during

transportation, immediately advise the carrier. If damage is evident from package
appearance, do not destroy or remove any of the packing material used. Carrier
companies will usually not accept claims for damaged material unless they can
inspect the damaged item and its associated packing material. Claims must be made
promptly, within five days from the reception of goods.

3 Features

The following chapter describes Aquila main features and its connection with external

equipment.

Aquila is a system designed to be used in places where 110/230Vac power supply voltage

is not available.

It is supplied by an internal battery with a guaranteed autonomy of more than 20 hours

after a complete charge. For correct use of the device, it is recommended to fully charge

it before every use.

Furthermore, it is provided with a wireless Wi-Fi connection that ensures the equipment

connectivity to the laptop control unit and simplifies the measurement set up, thus

decreasing the minimum time required for electrical connections.

Alternatively, an Ethernet connection might be achieved by using the additional optical

fiber cable if wireless connectivity is disturbed by interference signals, avoiding any

possible loss of user’s safety.

A bluetoothTM connection is available for connection to Ti Aquila Pro, either on tablet or

PC, that allows remote control of the main feature and interrogate the device. See chapter

5, Aquila app for tablet, for details about available commands and information.

4 Operations

POWERING THE SYSTEM

The instrument can be powered both from batteries, allowing portability, and from AC

electrical line.

If the batteries are present when the instrument is connected to the AC line they will be

charged if needed; the charging process and energy equalization between the two

batteries is fully controlled by the instrument and no user action is required.

The instrument can normally operate with a single battery but the operating time will be

halved.

1) Insert the batteries or connect the instrument to the AC line

2) Press and keep pressed the Power button : the relevant LED will blink; as it will

stop blinking and will stay ON, it is possible to release the button. (The user should

note that this procedure is common to all the functions switched ON/OFF from the

instrument’s panel – i.e. bluetooth, Wi-Fi, etc.).

Fig. 4.1: To switch ON/OFF a function, press and keep pressed the relevant button until the LED stops to

blink.

3) The instrument will be now powered and the relevant LED will be lighted; the Bluetooth

interface is also powered ON as default.

In this condition the Aquila can be programmed or controlled by the App on the tablet

(see chapter 5 for details).

ENABLE CONNECTIVITY

As the Aquila is powered ON, the user can control the basic functions through the control

panel or fully operate the instrument from the tablet.

The two medium connectivity (RF or fiber optic) can be enabled pressing the relevant

button on the control panel; both the communication channel can be switched ON or OFF

independently; the power state of the two peripherals is indicated by the relevant LED.

Fig. 4.2: To switch ON/OFF a particular function press the relevant button on control panel.

Activating the Ethernet connection ( ) the user can connect the instrument to an end

point through fiber optic using one of the two ST pairs of connectors placed on the

connection panel. The connection will be established when the relevant diode LED on the

control panel blink YELLOW and RED showing link activity.

Using more than one device is possible connecting them through fiber optic in order to

realize a chain of instruments. This configuration is useful for monitoring sessions or for

high number of measuring points.

In order to operate correctly, all the instruments in the chain must be ON at the same time.

Activating the WiFi channel, the user can interact with the instruments completely wireless.

In order to connect the instrument, after enabling the WiFi , connect the network

named “AQUILA_xxyzzz”; the preloaded configurations on the tablet should connect

automatically to the instrument network.

6 Battery use

Aquila is provided with two 8.7 Ah lithium batteries (Li-ion), namely NI2020HD29 by

Inspired Energy LLC. The batteries are the most delicate part of the unit and need

particular care. This battery must be checked several times during unit operation.

It must be stocked with at least 60% of residual charge in case the unit will remain unused

for months.

It is anyway important to avoid the battery to go to complete discharge before recharging,

this might cause serious damages to the lithium cells, diminishing the lifespan of the

battery.

Before using Aquila please read carefully the attached Annex on safety rules.
