HISTORY OF ATHLETICS
Track and Field is the one of the oldest among all sporting competition. Athletics was part of
Panhellenic games. Olympics is the most important among Panhellenic game. It dates back to
776 BCE held at Sanctuary of Olympiad. The Isthmian Games, in the sanctuary of Isthmus of
Corinth, first historically dated in 582 B.C.; the Pythian Game, in the sanctuary of Delphi, first
well known in 582 B.C.; and the Nemean Games, in the valley of Nemea, registered since 573
B.C.
THE PYTHIAN GAMES
During this game Athletics was gradually introduced with first inclusion 4 track events
(stadion, diaulos, dolichos, hoplitodromos) and pentathlon.
