CHARACTER DESCRIPTION

Napoleon Smart pig; takes leadership role after the animals rebelled;
Represents Stalin; Manipulative

Snowball Pig who challenges Napoleon for control of Animal Farm after
the Rebellion, represents Leon Trotsky; intelligent; loves giving
speeches; chased off by the dogs

Squealer Pig who spreads Napoleon’s propaganda among the other


animals; justifies the pigs’ using all the resources; spreads false
statistics

The Nine Dogs Taken as puppies by Napoleon and raised them himself; they are
his own little private army- represents the NKVD- Stalin’s police
force; they are brutal, vicious, and loyal to Napoleon

Boxer Cart horse with incredible strength and dedication; played key
role in the early part of Animal Farm and completion of the
Windmill; trusts pigs; sent to the glue factory

Mollie Flighty mare who is vain; pulls Mr. Jones’ carriage. Craves
attention of humans; loves being pampered; Does not do well on
Animal Farm- misses her pampering. Represetns the petit
bourgeoisie who fled Russia a few years after Russian Revolution

Benjamin Donkey who refuses to feel inspired by the Rebellion; believes


live will remain unpleasant no matter who is in charge; he sees
the changes, but does not do anything about it

Old Major Prize-winning boar; has vision of a socialist utopia; inspires


Rebellion; Teaches animals “Beasts of England” song; Dies,
leaving Snowball and Napoleon to struggle for control; based
on Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin
CHARACTER DESCRIPTION

Clover Horse who is Boxer’s companion; strong and loyal; represents


female proletariat workers and laborers; notices the
hypocrisy of the pigs

Moses A raven; The Jones favorite pet; clever talker; flies off after
Mrs. Jones and disappears for years; returns after the Battle
of the Windmill; Spreads rumor about Sugarcandy Mountain;
Represents Russian Orthodox Church

Mr. and Mrs. Mr. Jones is a farmer who is often drunk. He runs the Manor
Farm before the animals rebel and establish Animal Farm.
Jones Unkind to the animals; Represents Tsar Nicholas II, whom
the Russian Revolution ousted, and his wife

Bluebell, Dogs who give birth early in the novel. Napoleon takes
the puppies to “educate” them.

The Sheep Manipulated by Napoleon by teaching them cheers and
chants; represent the Russians swayed by the mass
propaganda

Mr. Pilkington Easygoing gentleman farmer who runs Foxwood, a


neighboring farm; Mr. Frederick’s enemy; Represents the
capitalist governments of England and the United States

Mr. Frederick Tough operator of the neighboring farm, Pinchfield. Based


on Adolf Hitler, ruler of Nazi Germany in the 1930s and
1940s. Proves untrustworthy.

Mr. Whymper Human solicitor hired by Napoleon to represent Animal


Farm in human society

Muriel White goat who read the 7 Commandments to Clover


when Clover thinks the pigs are violating their rules
