The objective of this method statement is to define the general guidelines for tiling.

2: PURPOSE & SCOPE

The purpose of this method statement is to define the work procedure for tiling. Works
shall be carried out in compliance with the drawings, project specifications, and
materials.

3: REFERENCE & STANDARDS

 Project Specifications (SEC. 09 30 00) - Tiling


 International Building Code 2009
 Manufacturer Specifications and Recommendations
 Quality Requirements (Section 014000)
 Grout for Unit Masonry (ASTM C476)
 Project Drawings Issued for Construction (IFC)
 Contractor Site Safety Plan (CSSP)

4: RESPONSIBILITIES

4.1: Project Manager:


It is the overall responsibility of the PM to organize resources to perform construction
activities as per project specifications, in compliance with quality, schedule, and safety
requirements.

4.2: Construction Manager:


It is the responsibility of CM that construction activities are executed according to the
relevant project specifications, in compliance with quality, schedule & safety
requirements.

4.3: Civil Engineer:


The Civil Engineer shall monitor and manage all the tiling works as per IFC drawings
and project specifications under safe conditions by the contractor site safety plan.

4.4: Surveyor:
The surveyor will be mobilized to the site before starting any tile installation. Mark
the starting point with X and Y lines on the floor parallel to the walls as shown in IFC
drawings.

4.5: QA/QC Inspector


QA/QC Inspector will make sure the following items and all field inspections will be
carried out under project specification 014000 related to the quality requirement
services:
4.5.1 He will ensure that the mock-up and materials are approved before starting the
work.
4.5.2 Work should be carried out as per the latest revision of drawings.
4.5.3He will ensure that plumpness and leveling are within the tolerance.
4.5.4 He will coordinate with the SAPMT for the required inspection as per the
approved ITP.
4:5.5 He will keep a record of all inspection and testing reports related to the activity.

4.6: Safety Inspector:


The safety inspector would be responsible for the following items:
4.6.1 He will make sure that all construction activities are carried out under approved
CSSP.
4.6.2 He will make sure that all workers have proper PPEs.
4.6.3 He will verify and confirm proper certification and inspections of
tools/equipment before starting the work.
4.6.4 He will make sure that provision of safe access to the work area and will carry
out the inspections.
4.6.5 He makes sure of the presence of a work permit (Cold work permit) and a list of
involved personnel at the site.
4.6.6 All signals and signs will not be removed from the site until work completion.
4.6.7 He will produce the Job risk assessment before commencing the activity and will
identify the hazards before starting of activity.

5: PROCEDURE AND METHODOLOGY


5.1 MOCK-UP
a. Provide mock-ups for each type of floor and wall tile installation.

WATERPROOFING AND ACCESSORIES


 Waterproofing work and leak test report where required
must be confirmed before laying of tiles.

 Provide Waterproof and Crack Isolation Membrane:


Chlorinated Polyethylene Sheet.
 Provide metal edge strips.

5.3INTERIOR TILE INSTALLATION SCHEDULE


 Interior Floors on Concrete: TCNA F111 - Cement mortar
bed with cleavage membrane. Sand-Portland cement grout.
 Interior Walls, Masonry, or Concrete: TCNA W202 -
Thinnest mortar. Standard grout.
 Bathtub/Shower Walls, Wood or Metal Studs: TCNA B411
– Cement mortar bed over the vapor-retarder membrane.
Sand Portland cement grout.
 Shower Receptor and Walls, Concrete or Masonry: TCNA
B414 – Cement mortar bed over the vapor-retarder
membrane. Sand Portland cement grout.

TILE INSTALLATION
PREPARATION CERAMIC TILE:
 Manual spreading and compaction to obtain uniform depth
and distribution. Remove stones and foreign materials.
 Perform cutting of tile without marring visible surfaces.
 Fit tile to an electrical outlet, piping, fixtures, and other
penetration as shown in the shop drawing.
 Ceramic tiles are to be soaked in water for one hour before
setting in place.
FLOOR INSTALLATION:

 Mark center lines for both axes as per the approved shop drawing.
 Lay tiles having grained patterns in the same direction in all rooms, according to
the IFC finishing schedule.
 Floor tiles are to be set in the same areas using thick wet mortar bedding on
uniformly distributed sand beds, each tile is to be beaten to ensure bedding of tiles.
 Start installing tiles in one direction alongside the center line.
 In wet areas provide slope to drains.
 Tiles with any chips, cracks, or otherwise defective shall not be used for the work.
 Fixing the tiles with equal vertical & horizontal space by using an approved plastic
cross spacer.
 Remove the knocking and disturb tiles before starting joint grouting.
 Filling the tile joints with approved grout.

 After completion of work remove and clean the extra grout/mortar or tools from
tiles and filled joints and allow to dry.

WALLS INSTALLATION:

 Reconfirm the existing reference levels and position provided at the site by the site
surveyor.
 All the joints (vertical & horizontal) must be unified.
 Apply the adhesive to the back of the tile and tap it into place at a required level
position on the wall
 Before placing the next tile take care to allow the correct joint width by placing the
correct spacers in all joints.
 Joint Widths: Unless otherwise indicated, install tile with the following joint
widths: 04:06MM
 Verify that tiles’ surface and verticality are within permissible limits.
 Fill the tile joints with approved grout.
 Site inspection of the complete wall area shall be undertaken.
 After all work is complete the area will be cleaned all waste removed to designated
waste disposal areas.

Note:

 Do not start joint grouting work till tiles are properly fixed to the surface.
 Comply with TCNA's "Handbook for Ceramic, Glass, and Stone Tile Installation"
for TCNA installation methods specified in tile installation schedules. Comply
with parts of the ANSI A108 series "Specifications for Installation of Ceramic
Tile" that are referenced in TCNA installation methods, specified in tile
installation schedules, and apply to types of setting and grouting materials used.
 Jointing Pattern: Lay tile in a grid pattern unless otherwise indicated. Lay out tile
work and center tile fields in both directions in each space or on each wall area.
Lay out tile work to minimize the use of pieces that are less than half of a tile.
Provide uniform joint widths unless otherwise indicated.
 On walls, tiles must be extended from the false ceiling by 100 mm.

INSPECTION AND HANDOVER OF ACTIVITY

 Before laying of tiles, Markings and Surface Preparation of Floor and Walls
should be inspected by QC.

 After completion of tile installation work, submit WIR for inspection and
approval.

6: QUALITY INSPECTION
 6.1 Inspection Test Plan (ITP) specific to project requirements shall be made and
inspection activities are recorded either on the forms or given under “Related
Documents”.
 6.2 He will ensure that the mock-up and materials are approved before starting the
work.
 6.3 He will ensure that the approved inspection checklist is followed.
 6.4 Keep a complete record of inspection reports with location and date.

7: PRECAUTION AND SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS


 7.1 Ensure that the mock-up, materials, and method statement are approved before
this work.
 7.2 Civil Engineer will ensure that all works are undertaken by the specified work
scope.
 7.3 All personnel must know the locations of fire extinguishers, communications,
manual alarms, and exit points.
 7.4 All personnel must know the emergency assembly points, wind direction,
escape routes, and emergency contact numbers.
 7.5 All personnel must know the listing of general alarms, different tones, and
warning/ hazard status lights.
 7.6 The safety inspector advises and is consulted by the area authority for confined
space entry certificates, area permits, and high-risk activities.
 7.7 Ensure that all personnel involved use necessary PPE (Personal Protective
Equipment).
 7.8 Carry out check daily toolbox and safety talks.
 7. Working area safety barricading is required to avoid accidents.
 7.10 Properly inspect all equipment, before use, to avoid equipment failure.

8: PROTECTION OF FINISHED WORK


 8.1 When tile installation is completed, remove equipment/tools and other
materials and clean floors of grout debris.

 8.2 Provide gypsum mortar over polyethylene sheets on floors to prevent the tiles
from scratching and damage.

 8.3 Provide temporary doors to control unauthorized personnel working inside.
