Las Atoms Molecules Ions
Las Atoms Molecules Ions
I. OBJECTIVES
An ion is an atom or a group of atoms that has a net positive or negative charge. The
number of positively charged protons in the nucleus of an atom remains the same during ordinary
chemical changes (called chemical reactions), but negatively charged electrons may be lost or
gained. The loss of one or more electrons from a neutral atom results in a cation, an ion with a net
positive charge. On the other hand, an anion is an ion whose net charge is negative due to an
increase in the number of electrons.

I. OBJECTIVES
1. Name compounds given their formula and write formula given the name of the
compound.
2. Apply the rules in writing and naming chemical formulas.
Atoms are usually bond together to form molecules. The composition of a molecule or an
ion can be represented by a chemical formula. If there is more than one atom present, a
numerical subscript is used.
The chemical formula of a substance is a notation that uses atomic symbols with numerical
subscripts to convey the relative proportions of atoms of the different elements in the substance.

VII. APPLICATION
Chemists once said that we are living in a world of Chemistry. There are hundreds of thousands
of substances available. It is important for us to familiarize with their common name and
chemical formula. Try to identify the common name/ chemical name of some substances
commonly found in our homes.
Vinegar 8. CH3COOH
