Audrey Veldman Vocational Training School – avvtc.ac.tz – AVVTC is a trade school for men and
women who have completed primary education or secondary education. There are roughly 120 male
students and 20 female students at present ranging from 14 to 26 years old. They study a variety of
trades which I have presented Grace with by email. The students complete a 2-year program which
trains them in the VETA system meaning that they also learn things like mathematics, physics, English,
and life skills. Additionally, short courses are provided which give a student a multi-month
introduction to a field of study without any extra coursework. AVVTC is an affordable school, costing
under 500,00 =/ ($250) per year. The school is heavily subsidized by the Asante foundation, and many
of the students’ tuition is waived for this reason.

Saint Andre Bessette High School is a remedial school for local students who have failed secondary or
elementary students. It has four teachers and covers all 10 mandatory subjects for Tanzanian
secondary schools. It has two programs, one is called PC (private candidate) and the other QT
(qualifying test). Solid students who have failed their Form 4 exam may enroll in PC to re-test in those
subjects which they performed poorly in. Students who failed their Form 4 exams greatly and
students who failed primary exams may enroll in PC which s a 2 year program which gives a small
certification and prepares one for PC. Bessette is located in the parish center and is funded by the Holy
Cross mission center. It, too, is inexpensive, costing about 500,000 per year.

* 4. Briefly describe your scope of work and responsibilities.

Mark and I helped at the schools in whatever way necessary and in whatever way we could. Our
primary work was in the classroom where we temporarily took over English, Physics,
Entrepreneurship, and Mathematics classes from the permanent classes at both AVVTC and Andre
Bessette . Though this was our primary bit of work, we had enough time and strongly encourage
future ISSLP students to find extra ways to become involved in the two schools. Mark and I started
English Clubs at both schools, created extra tutoring sessions in the morning and evening at Audrey
Veldman, began Saturday classes for Andre Bessette students, created a website for the school, and
filled in randomly when other teachers were not present or available. There are many opportunities
to help develop the schools, supplement and develop new programs.

What skills, prior experience, certifications, and/or training are important to have in order to be
effective at the site?Question Title
* 6. What skills, prior experience, certifications, and/or training are important to have in order to be
effective at the site?

Students must have a working knowledge of Swahili. It is nearly impossible to interact with
community members (parish workers, nearby families, young children) and sometimes even the
teachers and students. I encourage the ISSLP to mandate the students to either take the CSLC class for
Swahili or some other intense regiment for Swahili. We understand the difficulty of adding this
requirement, but it will greatly help the students integrate into the community and teach more
effectively.

Ni lazima kujua Kiswahili kidogo. Nilipenda kuongea kiswahili kwa kila mtu. Niliweza kufahamu
jumuia yetu na kufundisha vizuri kwa kiswahili changu. Ninakupendekeza kuwambia wanafunzi wajao
kwamba ni bora kujua kiswahili kabla ya kufika Tanzania.

Also, additional development in Teaching English as a foreign language would be a huge help. We felt
that we could have used more preparation for teaching students like those in Kitete – they have a
decent English vocabulary but struggle using the language in speaking and writing. Learning better
how to teach things like past tense and then practice using it would be very helplful.

Describe your relationship with your site supervisor(s) or mentor(s). What should future participants
know.Question Title
* 7. Describe your relationship with your site supervisor(s) or mentor(s). What should future participants
know.

Your supervisor, Brother Morris Achana, and the principal of both schools, Maryciana Zakaria, are
likely not going to keep you very busy. They are helpful resources and you will get to know them very
well, but they do not have a clear vision for your time in Kitete and will likely let you be as involved as
you make yourself. They are not particularly available and hard to get ahold of, so I would
recommend making a regular meeting time with each of them and getting their contact information.
Don’t be hesitant to ask for help, ask for work, or pitch projects to them. In fact, please do a lot of
that. Once you pitch something to them, ask them frequently to continue helping with it. Make use of
breakfast meetings with Brother Morris and random run ins with both of them throughout the day.
Also, it is good to make good relationships with teachers to work on projects with them.

Some particularly helpful teachers are Otorin Masinda, the computer teacher at AVVTC; Elizabeth
Bura, the school secretary at Andre Bessette; Domi, the academic (head teacher, maker of schedules,
planner of tests, etc.) at Andre Bessette; and Alphonse Itiki, the academic at AVVTC. Creating good
and effective relationship with these people as you begin your time there is your “Way in” to how the
school runs and the best way to plan and execute things. I encourage you to get to know these people
right off the bat.

Nancy Ickler – Director, Asante Foundation – Nancy.ickler@asantefound.org

Nancy is the director of the funding orginazion for the school. She is effectly a visionary and
administrator for the school. She can teach you about the school and help you come up with ideas of
things to do there. You’ve gotta meet with her. She lives in South Bend and would love to have coffee
with you a few times before you go. I recommend meeting at last once or twice before you go and
then staying in communication with her.

Father David Eliaona, CSC – Graduate Student, ND – dlyimo@nd.edu

Father David was once the head of AVVTC in Kitete and loves the place. He is a native Tanzanian. He
can teach you about Holy Cross, the parish, and the school. You’ve got to get to know him a little bit. I
encourage weekly Kiswahili practice sessions before you go.

* 10. What other language or dialect is spoken and how necessary is it to know?

There is also a local language, kiiraqw. It is good to know greetings and sayings in it, but few people
actually speak it in the Church or school and it is not much help.

Is English a language used at your site? If so, explain how extensively it is used.Question Title
* 11. Is English a language used at your site? If so, explain how extensively it is used.

Yes, English is used and is the main language in the classroom and should be used outside of the
classroom with students as well. However, English is rarely used outside of the school and parish
setting. Oftentimes teachers do not speak English with one another or with their students which is
one of the challenges of the schools that the ISSLP students can aim to develop.

Describe your housing arrangement.Question Title

* 12. Describe your housing arrangement.
We lived in decently sized (150 square feet) rooms with a bed, a chair, a shelf, and a few shelves in the
guest house nearby the parish. Mark, myself, and another parish guest shared a bathroom with
running water, toilet paper supply (get it in the storeroom attached to the kitchen), and a warm
shower with very little water pressure (on/off switch is up on the wall on the opposite side of the
bathroom)

No transport or money whatsoever. The only traveling is into town which is not necessary and can be
done with the priests or with friends you make.

Could have been arranged by the site, but I did extra travel, so I arranged it. I also once traveled to the
airport by myself for only $7 or so without luggage.

future participants?

If you don’t have sprint, unlock your phone before you go and then purchase a Halotel sim card on
your way in from the airport. Bring an ID. It is 1,000 TSh, or 50 cents. Then buy airtime (vocha) at local
shops or buy Halopesa in Whitskim or Karatu to get minutes and data on the phone. You could also
buy a mobile hotspot or a small local phone if you can’t unlock your phone. I had AT&T and a Samsung
phone, so unlocking was easy. I recommend having the phone because it was really nice to be able to
call people on the local network.

All done through my hotspot. Over the course of the summer I probably spend about $50 for internet
for Mark and myself. The parish also have spotty internet that they use a hotspot for. It’s unreliable,
but they have internet a few times a week that you can use.

Nothing, really. You could actually consider not taking the Malaria pills. Listen to everybody in terms
of water consumption. Make sure to bring diarrhea medicine.
