Geology simply means earth Science. It deals with the study of the origin, history
composition, and the structure of the Earth.
In 1795, Scottish geologist James Hutton suggested that Earth was continually
changing as a result of erosion and mountain-building forces. In 1815, English
engineer William Smith drew a map showing the layers of different ages. Geologists
plotted a chart that shows in rock layers and fossils overtime. In the 1900s, they
proved that Earth’s landforms had originally been one large continent named
Pangea. Later Pangea broke up into smaller continents that drifted very slowly
apart. This movement is called continental shift.
