Q.1. Define an operating system ?
Ans:- An operating system (OS) is system software that manages
computer hardware ,software resources, and provides common services
for computer programs.
Q.2. What is GUI ?
Ans:- A GUI (graphical user interface) is a system of interactive visual
components for computer software. A GUI displays objects that convey
information, and represent actions that can be taken by the user. The
objects change color, size, or visibility when the user interacts with
them.
Q.3. What is CUI ?
Ans:- A command-line interface processes commands to a computer
program in the form of lines of text. The program which handles the
interface is called a command-line interpreter or command-line
processor.
Q.4. Expand GUI, CUI, BIOS and MSDOS ?
Ans:-GUI- A GUI (graphical user interface) is a system of interactive
visual components for computer software. A GUI displays objects that
convey information, and represent actions that can be taken by the user.
The objects change color, size, or visibility when the user interacts with
them.
CUI:- A command-line interface processes commands to a computer
program in the form of lines of text. The program which handles the

BIOS:- BIOS (basic input/output system) is the program a computers


micro processoruses to start the computer system after it is powered on.
It also manages data flow between the computer's operating system (OS)
and attached devices, such as the hard disk, video adapter, keyboard,
mouse and printer.

MSDOS:- MS-DOS is an operating systemforx86basedpersonal


computers mostly developed by Microsoft .Collectively, some operating
system attempt to be compatible with MS-DOS are sometimes referred
to as
“ DOS”.
Q.5. What are the main functions of DOS?

Ans:- Functions of DOS (Disk Operating System)

1. It takes commands from the keyboard and interprets them.


2. It shows all the files in the system.
3. It creates new files and allots space for programme.

4. It changes the name of a file in place of old name.


5. It copies information in a floppy.
6. It helps in locating a file.
7. It searchers where the file is located in the disk.
8. If we want the information in the file to be printed, it gives printout
of the information.
9. It hides the files and directories so as not to be seen by others.
10. It permanently removes the file.

Q.6 What is an internal command ?


Ans:-An internal command is an MS-DOS command that is
stored in the system memory and loaded from the command.com or
cmd.exe.
Q.7. What is an external command ?
Ans:-An external command is an MS-DOS command that is not
included in command.com. External commands are commonly external
either because they require large requirements or are not commonly used
commands.
Q.8. What is an aero ?
Ans:- Windows Aero is a design language introduced in the
Windows Vista operating system. The changes made in the Aero
interface affected many elements of the Windows interface, including
the incorporation .
Q.9. What is search box?
Ans:- A search box is a graphical element present in many desktop
applications and websites. It acts as the field for a query input or search
term from the user to search and retrieve related information from the
database. A search box typically appears as a single-line text box and is
usually accompanied by a search button that initiates the search
command.
Q.10. What is Gadget ?
Ans:- A gadget is a small tool such as a machine that has a particular
function, but is often thought of as anovelty.[1]
Gadgets are sometimes referred to asgizmos

Q.11. What is help and support in Windows?


Ans:- The Windows Help and Support program works much like a Web
site or folder. To move back one page, click the little blue Back arrow in
the upper-left corner. That arrow helps you out if you've backed into a
corner. The second section, Ask Someone, walks you through
establishing a Remote Assistance session.
Q.12. What is multitasking?
Ans:- The process of having a computer perform multiple tasks
simultaneously. During multitasking, tasks such as listening to a CD or
browsing the Internet can be performed in the background while using
others in theforeground.
Q.13. What is file system ?
Ans:- A file system is a process that manages how and where data on a
storage disk, typically a hard disk drive (HDD), is stored, accessed and
managed. It is a logical disk component that manages a disk's internal
operations as it relates to a computer and is abstract to a human user.
Q.14. What are four default libraries in library ?
Ans:- In Windows 7, there are four default libraries:

1. Documents
2. Music
3. Pictures
4. Videos
All the default libraries include two standard folders: the user folder
specific to each library and the public folder specific to it.

Q.15. What is an icon ?


Ans:- In computing, an icon is a pictogram or ideogram displayed on a
computer screen in order to help the user navigate a computer system.

Q.16. What is a folder?


Ans:- A digital folder has the same purpose as a physical folder – to
store documents. Computer folders can also store other type such as
applications, archives, scripts ,and libraries. Folders can even store other
folders, which may contain additional files and folders.
Q.17. What is desktop ?
Ans:- A desktop computer is a personal computer designed for
regular use at a single location on or near a desk or table due to its
size and power requirements.
Q.18. What is Recycle Bin ?
Ans:- In Windows, the Recycle Bin is a folder or directory where
deleted items are temporarily stored. Deleted files are not permanently
removed from the hard drive but are sent instead to the Recycle Bin,
unless they are too large. The files in the Recycle Bin can be restored to
their original location. They cannot be used directly while they are in the
Recycle Bin.
Q.19. What is Control panel ?
Ans:- The Control Panel is a component of Microsoft Windows that
provides the ability to view and change system settings. It consists of a
set of applets that include adding or removing hardware and software,
controlling user accounts, changing accessibility options, and accessing
networking settings.

Q.20. What is device manager ?


Ans:- Device Manager is a Control Panel applet in Microsoft Windows
operating systems. It allows users to view and control the hardware
attached to the computer. When a piece of hardware is not working, the
offending hardware is highlighted for the user to deal with. The list of
hardware can be sorted by various criteria.

Q.21. What is notification area in taskbar ?


Ans:- The notification area is located at the right end of the taskbar. It
contains some icons you might find yourself clicking or pressing pretty
often: battery, Wi-Fi, volume, Clock and Calendar, and action center.
It provides status and notifications about things like incoming email,
updates, and network connectivity.
