Holding the Trumpet

It is recommended to hold the trumpet as in the picture. Keep your right-hand pinky on top
of the finger support instead of inside it. The goal is to not pull the instrument against your face. Try
to keep your fingertips on top of the valves while practicing, without raising them as you change
notes. That will make it easier for you to play fast passages in the future.

While seated, try not to lean against the back of the seat for a natural free of tension
posture. Imagine that you are a puppet being hung by the head; relaxed shoulders and upper body,
keep your feet on the ground.

Warm Up

Change notes as if you were glissando from one to another

Relax in between exercises. Get the mouthpiece off your lips.

Play in one breath, no breathing in the middle of the exercise

Play with the goal of getting to the end of the exercise instead of focusing in each note individualy.
Continue playing the exercise slowly.

Try to maintain a mp – mf dynamic among the registers.

Focus on lip vibration and the sound without interruptions.

Carefully, remove the tuning slide, insert the mouthpiece and play the following exercises.
Play each exercise using “pooh” attacks (without using your tongue to start the exercise)

Attention with the articulation. All repeated notes should sound uniform.

Each note start should be clean, with no air before sound (or sound mixed with air)

Attention to articulation and intonation.

Practice with a mf dynamic, whichever articulation style you start, you should maintain (i.e. “ta,”
“da,” “ka,” etc.)

Attention to the beginnings and ends of notes. Focus on not changing intonation (flat while getting
louder or sharp while getting softer).
